Transnet Group Chief Executive Portia Derby and Group Chief Financial Officer Nonkululeko Dlamini have stepped down from their roles. Derby’s departure is scheduled for the end of this month, while Dlamini concluded her tenure at the end of September.
Transnet also announced changes in leadership roles, with Michelle Phillips, Chief Executive of Transnet Pipelines, set to assume the role of Acting GCE from November 1st and Hlengiwe Makhathini taking on the role of Acting Group CFO.
The statement also reflected on Portia Derby’s tenure as GCE, which began in February 2020, and the challenges faced during her time in office. It mentioned the significant challenges, including the setting aside of the 1064 locomotive contract, the global COVID-19 pandemic, hacking of the ICT system, floods in KwaZulu-Natal, and a strike at the end of 2022, all of which had a negative impact on Transnet. The floods, in particular, required substantial capital investment to restore the critical Container Corridor between Johannesburg and Durban.
Transnet’s board chairperson, Andile Sangqu, expressed appreciation on behalf of the board for the dedication, hard work, and selflessness of both Portia and Nonkululeko during this crucial phase in the company’s history.
