Abi Tierney Joins Welsh Rugby Union as its First Female CEO
During a recent conference, the rugby union unveiled Abi Tierney as its new CEO, marking a significant milestone as Wales becomes only the second nation globally to have a female chief executive leading its rugby union.
Currently serving as the director general for customer services at the Home Office, Ms. Tierney’s appointment follows the departure of the previous CEO in January, prompted by allegations of racism, sexism, and homophobia within the WRU.
Having familial ties to South Wales through her father from Barry, Ms. Tierney highlighted the positive influence that rugby has held in her life. Nigel Walker, who has been serving as Acting CEO since January, will transition into a new role as director of rugby.
An investigative BBC documentary exposed allegations of a “toxic culture” within the organization, as former Welsh rugby governing body employees came forward with their accounts.
Presently, the WRU board consists of 11 male members out of a total of 12. However, the union has a member-approved goal to ensure that at least 40% of the board comprises women. Ms. Tierney expressed her sense of privilege in leading the WRU, emphasizing her intent to bring about a positive and lasting impact during a crucial period.
Addressing the issue of psychological safety, Ms. Tierney stressed the importance of creating an environment where individuals can freely express their concerns and take a stand against inappropriate behavior. She emphasized the significance of this approach, starting from the board’s leadership and extending throughout the organization.
Richard Collier-Keywood, the WRU’s independent chair, emphasized the urgency of forming the new leadership team before the Rugby World Cup. He highlighted the importance of facilitating an environment in which players can focus on their performance without distractions.
