Technology and Symphony: How IT CEOs Are Redefining Classical Music
In an era where technology is reshaping nearly every facet of human life, from the way we communicate to how we create art, a groundbreaking collaboration is bridging two worlds that once seemed far apart: classical music and cutting-edge innovation. The Armenian State Symphony Orchestra, under the leadership of Armen Tavadyan, is pushing boundaries with the support of some of the world’s most influential tech leaders.
This unlikely union between the traditional art of classical music and the forward-thinking nature of the tech industry took root during the 2019 WCIT International IT Conference held in Armenia. It was there that Alexander Yesayan, President of the Union of Advanced Technology Enterprises was first introduced to the ambitious ideas of Armen Tavadyan, who had just taken over as CEO of the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra.
At the time, the proposal was bold, even unconventional. Tavadyan envisioned positioning the Armenian orchestra not just as a cultural institution but as a pioneer in innovation, melding the ancient art form with the most advanced technologies of today. Yesayan, intrigued by the potential of this fusion, recalls, “His vision of integrating the orchestra into the global landscape of innovation immediately captured my imagination.”
What started as an idea soon turned into a reality, with Maestro Sergey Smbatyan leading the orchestra in what would become a groundbreaking performance. The Armenian State Symphony Orchestra made history by opening the World Congress on Innovation & Technology with a live concert featuring music composed by artificial intelligence-performed as it was being written-before a crowd of over 70,000 in Republic Square. It was a powerful moment, one that reverberated far beyond the borders of Armenia. Media outlets around the world were quick to note the significance: AI, long associated with engineering, transportation and big data, was now composing symphonic works, blurring the lines between human creativity and machine learning.
Reflecting on that historic performance, Tavadyan explains, “The world has witnessed AI make developments in so many fields, but that day, our orchestra showed that the future of art, science, and engineering lies in their ability to collaborate.” It wasn’t just a concert-it was a statement about what the future might hold for the intersection of creativity and technology.
But perhaps the most significant outcome of this daring project was the formation of a Board of Trustees, comprised of the very tech leaders who saw potential in Tavadyan’s vision. Prominent figures from companies like PicsArt, SADA Systems, ServiceTitan, and Agenus, decided to support the orchestra’s mission to innovate, not merely in performance but in approach to art itself. “That day, it became clear that this was only the beginning, and we need a clear strategy to move ahead” Armen Tavadyan remarks. “We decided to invite some of the most successful people in the IT industry to join us for even more ambitious projects. This board is the materialization of that daring vision.”
The implications of this partnership are enormous. Not only does it signal a new era for the Orchestra, but it also suggests a larger trend: the merging of cultural and technological innovation as industries that once operated in parallel begin to converge. With an impressive board in place, including some of the most successful minds in the tech world, Tavadyan is confident about the future. “With such an outstanding Board of Trustees behind us, I am confident that we will reach even greater heights and solidify the innovative spirit that defines our orchestra,” he says.
This partnership between the symphony orchestra and some of the world’s leading IT companies is more than just a cultural experiment-it represents a broader shift in how we might imagine the future of both art and technology. With ambitious projects already in development, this collaboration is poised to bring unprecedented experiences to global audiences, proving that when innovation and tradition come together, the possibilities are limitless.
