5 Things About The International School Of Turin For Elementary Education

Italy has been historically a popular immigration choice. Today, it carries its long-lasting legacy and rapid contemporary developments in great style. It is truly an international country, and this is especially reflected in its education system. Many international schools have come up in the past few decades. These schools have been providing a comfortable, quality learning ecosystem to children of migrants.

Ex-pats often choose international schools in Italy due to the language and cultural barriers in local schools. And there’re several options to choose from. One such option is the International School of Turin.

Here are a few things you should know about the International School of Turin (hereinafter ‘IST’).

  1. How did it all start?

We have to go back to 1963. IST was founded as the American International School of Torino. Initially, the campus was near Caselle but later moved to Villa Virginia in the hills of Turin. The school went on to admit and teach students from all walks of life for more than 20 years but received its due recognition from the Educational Collaborative for International Schools (ECIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEAASC) in 1984.

In 1990, the school secured the IB Diploma authorization consolidating its reputation as a prominent international school. In two years, the school decorated the graduates of the first IB class. However, it was only in 2006 the school obtained the authorization to offer the IB Primary Years Programme.

  1. IB Primary Years Programme: Elementary School

To ensure your child excels in his elementary education, one must ensure a comprehensive curriculum. And IST is known for designing and implementing the same across all grades. However, we’ll limit our focus to elementary education.

Under its elementary school curriculum, the focus is on subjects encouraging social, physical, cultural, and emotional well-being. Thus, an inquiry-based approach is incorporated with the help of transdisciplinary themes.

Core subject areas majorly include English, Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics. There are also subjects such as Information Technology, Art, and Music. An option to learn Italian is also provided.

  1. Extra-curricular activities

Mere academics won’t assure a well-rounded future for the child. In elementary school, especially, children show great enthusiasm to participate in extra-curricular. And IST understands that.

A wide range of activities are offered for participation. The school manages a sports program to engage students in after-school activities such as basketball, soccer, chess, tennis, and swimming. Field trips are regularly conducted within and beyond Italian borders.

  1. Facilities at IST

The quality of the in-campus facilities falls on the upper end of the scale. The campus itself is an aesthetic experience with a beautiful blend of new and historic buildings. Aside from this, of course, several infrastructural facilities are provided.

The campus houses a multi-purpose assembly hall, a gymnasium, a central Piazza, an outdoor football pitch, a library, three science labs, a basketball court, and a cafeteria. All classrooms are techno-friendly and fitted with digital implements.

  1. What about admissions?

A few things should be remembered if you intend to apply for admission to the elementary school. These pointers are applicable across all grades. Priority is always given to international candidates with an English-speaking background, afterward to such students with a non-English background, and then to the siblings of the current students.

For admissions, candidates will have to apply online. For candidates from grades 6 to 12, placement examinations are conducted. Otherwise, decisions are largely taken upon the documents furnished, including score sheets from previous schools, English language skills, and otherwise.
