Dan Clancy is the new CEO of Amazon-owned Twitch
Emmett Shear, CEO of Amazon-owned Twitch, has announced that he will be stepping down from his role as chief executive, which he co-founded over 16 years ago. Amazon acquired Twitch, known for its community of video game enthusiasts, for almost $1 billion in 2014. Twitch is most known as a popular livestreaming platform for video gamers.
Amazon’s influence allowed the Twitch streaming platform to achieve 8 million monthly active streamers and rack up billions of hours in viewership.
Twitch President Dan Clancy will take on the CEO role at the company. With a BA in Computer Science and a Ph.D. in artificial intelligence, Dan Clancy (Emmett Shear’s successor) has previously held senior roles at NASA, Google, and Nextdoor.
In a blog post, Shear described his readiness to move on from the company he’s been intimately involved with for 16 years. “Twitch often feels to me like a child I’ve been raising as well,” Shear said. “And while I will always want to be there if Twitch needs me, at 16 years old it feels to me Twitch is ready to move out of the house and venture alone.”
UPDATE:
Twitch CEO Dan Clancy confirmed that the Amazon-owned livestreaming platform was letting go of some 400 employees.
“Like many companies, our business has been impacted by the current macroeconomic environment, and user and revenue growth has not kept pace with our expectations,” Clancy wrote. “In order to run our business sustainably, we’ve made the very difficult decision to shrink the size of our workforce.”
