Kindness – the reasons to adopt a kind behavior

A king and a beggar in the office

Some people say that kindness is more important than wisdom and that the recognition of this, is the beginning of wisdom. The story I am about to tell you is not real but it has inspired many people to adjust their behavior in a way that will prove beneficial for them and their fellow citizens. It talks about a fair King but in his place, there could perfectly be the owner of a modern company who does not only care about increasing the profits of his own ”kingdom” but who also has a vision and want to help humanity as a whole.

To be happy you cannot just be successful, you also need to have a vision where the center of your ideas will be how to produce positivity – whatever this means for anybody. Traveling to space and being able to conquer other planets so that people of tomorrow can have a place to live is a similar idea. Everyone has a different perception of what offering is but in all cases, the bottom line is that the individual does not only think in a selfish way. The following is a story about kindness and genuine love for one another, so let’s have a look.

Once upon a time, a King who had no sons wanted to find a person to take the throne after his death. He invited all the people who lived in his empire to come for an interview, suggesting that their only qualification was that they should have a genuine love for all human beings. A poor villager heard the news and wanted to ”apply” for the throne. He was very poor and he did not have enough food to start the big journey that would last for days until he reached the palace, and his clothes were old and inappropriate.

He worked hard to collect money to buy food and clothes and finally started his trip. On his way, he found a beggar in a terrible condition and decided to give him his clothes and share his food with him. When he reached the palace he showed up with his old clothes since he had given away the new clothes to the homeless person he found on his way. Eventually, he was allowed to see the King who would decide whether he is the right man. When the gates opened instead of the King he saw the beggar’s face. The King told him he was the beggar he had met on the way and the villager asked why he got dressed like that since he could afford better clothing. The King explained that he wanted to test the candidates and see who would stop to help a beggar from whom he had nothing to win. The person who would do that was genuinely kind and would become a fair King.

Even though our story takes place in the old times where Kings and palaces were very common in fairy tales, we can see that if we transfer this story to the present it does not differ a lot from the values we still search for in other people. Today, if you want to test how ”civilized” someone is just try to notice how they talk to a waiter. The way they behave to a person like that shows the level of their integrity. We all know how we talk to our superiors.

We always treat them with respect as someone back then would talk to a King but the question remains: How do we treat those who do not seem to have anything to offer? Are we willing to give when we are not expected to take back?

The offering is not something we should do because we expect to take something in exchange. Neither because we expect that karma will act in a bizarre inexplicable way and give us something in return.

Finally, I guess, we should not offer things just because we expect a ”test” like this to take place and, of course, we should not do it so that other people will see our good intentions and praise us. In other words, it is not about taking and it is not about other people. It is something we do because it makes us feel better. Knowing that we helped another soul should be enough to make us feel great.
