How HR Managers Can Make Compliance Training More Interesting
Compliance training has now become a real need for the organizations. Conducting such training not only help employees to know about companies policies but also make them understand their day-to-day job responsibilities.
Though the organizations are making the best use of compliance training, they do not put efforts to make it more interesting and engaging for the employees. Due to lack of engagement and motivational factor, the training seems dull and employees end-up gaining nothing. However, there are certain ways through which HR managers can make the compliance training effective, interesting, and highly-engaging for their employees. In this post, we discuss some of those ways. Take a look.
Integrate Online Training
If you want your employees to take the compliance training seriously, you need to change the training pattern. Rather than conducting the entire session manually, you can use an employee training software to create online training courses. This way, you will provide flexibility to your employees of attending the training courses from the comfort of their own space. They can also go through these courses during their free working hours. All you need to do is make the right use of learning management system in creating such courses. Using cloud-based LMS, organizations can upload their documentation online and keep it centralized for everyone. This way, you not only make your compliance training convenient for employees but also beneficial for the company’s productivity.
Incorporate Media
Usually, the compliance training material consists of only content. That’s the reason employees are unable to stay concentrated for longer periods of time, which in turn, affects both their learning curve and their knowledge retention rate. However, the problem has a simple solution. The HR managers can make their compliance training interesting, interactive and be engaging by incorporating media in the form of audio and video. To do that, there is no dearth of employee training software that makes the job a cakewalk. The information provided through media is easier to absorb and can also emotionally engage people. Not to mention that videos rely on both video and audio stimuli, it is easier for course creators to engage the audience and pass on the information in an efficient manner.
Give Real World Examples
Making the compliance training more interesting and interactive, initially, seems impossible as it consists of company’s policies, rules and regulations. That said, nothing is impossible, you can definitely make your compliance training more engaging by giving employees real-world examples. Though it requires extra efforts. If you don’t have examples from your personal experience, don’t worry. You will be able to find a lot of them online. Make sure to dig up both positive and negative scenarios and try to stay on the topic. Focus on things that happen within your particular industry.
It would be great if you break down the examples into three sections: laws, regulations, and company policies. Every specific lesson should begin with an example of a positive practice followed by what employees need to learn. In the end, you can give a negative example to emphasize the seriousness of compliance and the extent of the damages that can happen if they don’t know their responsibilities.
Make the Courses Easy to Understand
It is a well-known fact that students perform and progress better when they are taught with smaller lesions and become familiar with the used terminology. Why wouldn’t you apply this to your compliance training courses as well?
You can start by dividing the course material into smaller sections. Once you are done with that, give your best to identify the legal terms that are not so familiar to the general public. Each lesson should be followed by a short dictionary focused follow-up. For instance: “In this section, we have used 4 new words, scroll down to see their definitions”.
In the end, it will be easier for you to identify which lesson can be turned into a video, infographic or diagram. By diversifying course material, you can make it more exciting and engaging for the employees.
Add Humor
Nobody said that online compliance training should be humor-free. In fact, if you add a pinch of it, you can make your course more interesting. The only challenge is how to use it. If you overuse humor, you will cast a shadow on the subject and its importance. If you make perfect use of it, you will be on the right track.
Before you start adding humor in your online courses, make sure to follow these rules:
- Humor should always be culturally appropriate (pay attention to employees coming from different cultures, as you may easily offend them)
- Make sure that to lean towards something positive. For instance, irony can be an excellent tool to convey a powerful message. Sarcasm, on the other hand, needs to be avoided.
- Humor should be motivational. Example:”Never stop trying to exceed your limits. We need the entertainment.”
Reward Their Effort
Good old positive conditioning should never be underestimated. If you want to encourage your employees to be as devoted as they can be – reward them. Just make sure to make a rewarding system that is transparent. By doing so, you will avoid unpleasantries. If you attach the reward system to your compliance training, you will make it interesting by turning it into a kind of competition.
These factors are not overly complicated and can be done by both less and more experienced HR managers. If you successfully create online training by incorporating these elements, you can quickly enhance the employees’ interest and make the course a successful training program.
