Top 25 Universities In The United States Spending The Most On Research And development (R&D), 2014

With $2.24 billion in R&D spending in 2014, Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore ranked No. 1 overall among universities and colleges in the United States spending the most on research and development, according to the latest numbers from the U.S. National Science Foundation.

University of Michigan came in second with $1.34 billion, followed by the University of Washington, with $1.17 billion in expenditures.

Six other schools joined Hopkins and Michigan in fiscal 2014 in the billion-dollar club. They were, in order, the University of Washington, the University of Wisconsin, the University of California at San Francisco, the University of California at San Diego, and Duke University.

The largest funding source for university research and development (R&D) is the federal government. Every institution surveyed spent $67 billion on research in 2014 collectively, an almost $20 billion increase since 2005.

10. University of California, Los Angeles
