Vietnam Seeks Chinese Loans for $8.3 Billion Railway Project
Vietnam has announced plans to secure loans from the Chinese government to partially finance an $8.3 billion railway project connecting the two countries, according to Transport Minister Nguyen Hong Minh on Thursday (Feb 13).
The country has been actively pursuing railway system upgrades and has approached China for both funding and technology to modernize its aging infrastructure.
Minh explained that Vietnam’s current railway system is outdated and emphasized the need for a modernized system to support the country’s economic growth. The proposed 391-kilometer railway is planned to run from Lao Cai, a city near the China-Vietnam border, through Hanoi, and extend to Haiphong, home to northern Vietnam’s largest seaport.
The new railway will feature a 1,435-millimeter gauge and will accommodate both passenger and cargo transport. Trains will be able to operate at speeds of up to 160 km/h.
Minh stated that construction is expected to begin this year, with the project set for completion by 2030. Parliament is scheduled to vote on the railway project next week during its ongoing meeting in Hanoi.
This railway development follows a November 2024 parliamentary resolution approving a $67 billion, 1,541-kilometer high-speed rail project linking Hanoi with the business hub of Ho Chi Minh City, which is targeted to begin operations in 2035.
