Why AI Prompt Engineering Is Important For Your Business

In the modern age of the internet, it is a near certainty that you have heard of artificial intelligence (AI) before. Whether you’ve used AI before for a personal project or just heard of big names like ChatGPT, it is likely AI has had some effect on your life. While the technology has rapidly advanced and is compatible for a non-tech savvy audience, it is still not perfectly adapted for the average person. The way you speak to an AI, word your sentences, and even the specific words used can all lead to significantly different AI generated responses to prompts.

This rings doubly true for companies with a tech emphasis or IT professionals that are utilizing AI skills. Many tech savvy fields tend to overestimate their proficiency with AI prompting. In fact, a staggering 81% of IT professionals think that they can effectively utilize AI, but it is estimated only a slim 12% have the skills to effectively engineer prompts for AI generations. Despite this lack of proficiently talented AI prompt engineers, the demand for them continues to reach new highs. In fact, as of 2024, as many as 2 in every 3 leaders simply wouldn’t hire someone who does not have any AI skills. So how do the majority of IT professionals stack up with the needs of businesses?

Currently, there is a 50% hiring gap between AI jobs and AI jobs roles, proving just how crucial and potentially beneficial learning AI can be. As many as 70% of global IT workers need to upgrade their AI skills to bring them up to speed, and 60% of IT decision makers attribute their largest skill gap to an AI knowledge deficiency. This presents itself in a couple of ways. These desk workers usually aren’t able to effectively use word prompts to get the most value from generative AI. Additionally, these workers are not able to identify trusted data sources for the generative AI in such a way to keep first-party company data private and secure.

Aside from simply data sources alone, one of the most influential factors in teaching an AI is the techniques and strategies you use to prompt the AI. For example, one of the most commonly used strategies is ‘chain-of-thought’, which means AI are taught to solve an answer in intermediate steps, rather than simply just providing one answer at the end. This is not only key for users to understand how an AI arrived at an answer, but it allows users to correct any incorrect assumptions the AI makes. Similarly, generated knowledge prompting is a frequently used technique. This technique involves using previously answered prompts in order to better enhance future answers for a particular user. This strategy is particularly useful for users who want to ask AI similar questions on the same topic, or if they are trying to ask AI questions on a topic without much information online. Lastly, when it comes to correcting an AI who generates an incorrect or undesired response, prompt engineers use least to most prompting. This simply means using the least amount of effort when correcting a prompt, in order to get the AI to use mostly its own functionality to improve its own responses.

When it comes to image and video generation, an entirely different set of techniques are used. Negative prompts, for example, are a strategy where you ask AI to specifically exclude something in a particular photo or generation. Textual generation, on the other hand, involves providing an AI a set of training images and asking it to generate an image or video similar to what you provided. Neither of these techniques are aimed at creating something new, but rather handily improving photos that your business has already created.

When it comes to learning, relearning, and cross-skilling, many new online courses have come to teach more about AI. When it comes to beginning your journey, you can start with an intro to AI course and advanced prompt engineering. For more intermediate learners, there are AI strategies for business and organizational leadership as well. However, most importantly, there are specific AI courses tailor made for certain aspects of business.

For more advanced users, there is AI for human resources, project management, and entrepreneurship. They also offer Ai for financial management, excel, marketing, and education. Regardless of what you’re trying to learn AI for, it is almost certainly a beneficial skill that is applicable to your business practices. Best of all, companies like YU Global offer these advanced prompt engineering courses which you can learn in under 2 months. So, whatever stage of AI knowledge you may be in, you can easily benefit from AI courses like YU Global.
