The Wealth of Thailand’s Monarch Who Tops the Global Rich List
Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn, also known as King Rama X, holds the title of the world’s richest monarch, with an estimated net worth exceeding $40 billion. His vast fortune is attributed to extensive landholdings, significant stakes in major Thai corporations, and an extravagant collection of luxury possessions.
A significant portion of King Vajiralongkorn’s wealth is derived from land ownership. The monarch oversees an astounding 16,210 acres across Thailand, including approximately 17,000 properties in Bangkok alone. These assets are managed through the Crown Property Bureau, an institution under the King’s direct authority, making him one of the largest landowners globally. The real estate portfolio includes some of Bangkok’s most coveted properties, generating substantial revenue and reinforcing the monarchy’s influence on the nation’s economy.
King Vajiralongkorn’s financial empire extends beyond real estate, with major stakes in two of Thailand’s leading companies. He holds a 23% share in Siam Commercial Bank, the second-largest financial institution in Thailand, and a 33.3% stake in Siam Cement Group, the country’s largest industrial conglomerate. These profitable investments enhance the King’s economic clout within the nation.
Known for his opulent lifestyle, the King’s luxury collection is unparalleled. Among his possessions is the Golden Jubilee Diamond, a 545.67-carat gemstone recognized as the largest and most valuable diamond in the world. His trove of treasures includes vast amounts of gold, silver, and pearls, symbolizing the monarchy’s grandeur.
The King’s impressive fleet of vehicles and aircraft further highlights his penchant for luxury. He owns 38 aircraft, including Boeing and Airbus models, as well as Sukhoi Superjets and 21 helicopters. On land, his collection surpasses 300 vehicles, featuring luxury brands such as Mercedes-Benz and an array of limousines. Additionally, he commands a flotilla of 52 intricately carved golden boats, each handcrafted to showcase the royal family’s historical grandeur.
While the Grand Palace in Bangkok, covering a staggering 2.35 million square feet, serves as the official royal residence, King Rama X is reportedly known to spend little time there. Instead, he is often seen residing abroad, particularly in Germany, where he owns a private home. This preference for a private lifestyle abroad has sparked curiosity and public speculation.
King Vajiralongkorn’s personal life has also drawn attention. Married four times, he has four children. In May 2019, he wed Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana shortly before his official coronation, elevating her to an official member of the royal family.
Although King Vajiralongkorn’s wealth surpasses that of most monarchs globally, it remains smaller than the fortunes of prominent Asian billionaires like Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani. Nonetheless, his fortune far exceeds that of other royals, reflecting the historical and cultural significance of the Thai monarchy’s wealth. The King’s control over the Crown Property Bureau and his substantial business and real estate assets underscore the monarchy’s entrenched role in Thai society and the economy.
The King’s immense wealth serves as a testament to the centuries-old influence of the Thai royal family, which continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s identity and economic framework.
