Q: Julie, tell us about your background and what led you to start Allen Partners.

A: My career began at Disney, where I rose to a leadership position following a college internship. It was an incredible environment, working with people I admired and respected, and I was offered numerous opportunities at a young age. I loved my work and the people around me. However, when my husband and I married, his career moved us to Chicago shortly after my father passed away from heart disease. This was a time of incredible joy and significant loss, which profoundly impacted my perspective on both life and work. In Chicago, I experienced a hiring process that initially looked promising but turned out to be a poor fit. That disappointment ignited a passion in me—there has to be a better way for companies to hire the right people and for individuals to find their place. This realization led me into the world of executive search, where I could truly make a meaningful difference.

Q: How does your experience inform your executive search work, especially in the Medtech field?

A: Our executive search practice is built around the needs of our clients—CEOs of companies with less than $100M in revenue, particularly Medtech companies looking for leaders who not only have the right qualifications but also fit well within their teams. My father’s heart disease fueled my passion for Medtech, as I witnessed firsthand the devastation of not having technology that could have saved him. I use my experiences and natural skill in getting to know someone at a deeper level to ensure a holistic approach. It’s not just about placing individuals; it’s about creating a team dynamic that works. Since founding Allen Partners, we’ve made 245 placements, maintaining an impressive track record—99% of offers accepted and 98.5% retention over a 3-5 year period. For every three candidates presented, one is hired, leading to remarkable time savings for my clients with greater precision. We’re a boutique firm, by design, offering white-glove service and superior results. We focus on quality over quantity.

Q: What prompted you to expand into coaching individuals?

A: In 2006, I recognized a growing need for personal guidance. Many individuals reached out, seeking advice on their career transitions and growth, inspired by my insights into what executives look for in leaders. I wanted to offer the same level of support and personal attention I provided to companies but directed at individuals. This desire led to the birth of my coaching program, where I help people dig deep into their goals and aspirations.

Q: What kinds of challenges do your coaching clients typically face?

A: My clients often have questions like:
• What do I need as an aspiring leader, or how do I become a CEO in the next 3-5 years?
• Do I want to pivot my career entirely?
• How do I communicate my value effectively?
• Am I seeking greater fulfillment, and how do I find it?
In our work together, we discuss what success looks like for them and identify areas for growth. I draw from my extensive experience to help them see possibilities they might overlook and guide them in communicating their accomplishments in ways that resonate with others.

Q: Can you share a specific example of how your coaching has made a difference?

A: Absolutely! This is an executive search example to illustrate how my experience can be applied to coaching clients and the insights they benefit from. One memorable case involved a candidate I placed as the Head of Commercialization in a promising start-up company. In his prior role as a VP of Marketing, his corporate BD team often pulled him into meetings to gain his insights on new technologies pitched by startup CEOs. He knew the market extremely well, and while he didn’t have direct M&A experience, his know-how was impressive. As I learned about the entirety of his experience, I knew that his perspective would be invaluable to one of my clients. He undervalued this experience, thinking it was standard in his field. I pointed out how unique and valuable his experience was, especially as he assessed pitches. After placing him, he played a crucial role with the CEO and was instrumental in achieving a $480 million acquisition. He’s now a CEO himself. This illustrates how I help clients uncover and articulate their strengths in ways they might not see.

Q: What do you find most rewarding about your coaching work?

A: Watching my clients grow in confidence and clarity is incredibly fulfilling. Many are already accomplished but haven’t taken the time to reflect on their growth. I love helping them articulate their value propositions and create actionable plans for their futures. Witnessing their transformation—not just in their careers but in their lives—is a true privilege.

Q: How do you see the relationship between career fulfillment and personal growth?

A: They are interconnected. When clients work on their careers, they often discover insights about themselves that lead to personal growth. My approach emphasizes that we are one person; what we do in our careers impacts our overall lives. By aligning their professional goals with personal aspirations, clients find greater meaning and fulfillment.

Q: When is the right time for someone to consider coaching?

A: It’s a good time to reach out when you’re at a crossroads—perhaps feeling restless or contemplating your career path. My coaching is designed for ambitious leaders who appreciate the balance of emotional and intellectual intelligence. If you’re ready to take an offensive approach to your career, that’s the moment to engage.

Q: What’s something people might not know about your coaching clients?

A: Many of my clients are seasoned professionals—directors, VPs, or C-level executives—who want to consider their next 10-20 career years with purpose. Interestingly, I also work with the children of my executive search clients. Many parents see the value in helping their young adult children navigate their careers as well.

Q: Lastly, what core values guide your work?

A: Trust, honor, and integrity are at the heart of everything we do. My husband and I have been married for 25 years, have four children, and have been working together at Allen Partners for nearly 20 years. We share a commitment to serving our clients with focus and dedication. Our genuine care for the people we work with is reflected in our track record and results.
