Wilhelmsen Ship Management Announces Leadership Transition as Carl Schou Retires After 19 Years

Wilhelmsen Ship Management has announced the retirement of Carl Schou after nearly two decades of service, including 16 years as CEO. Schou’s tenure was marked by the company’s navigation through industry challenges, with a focus on safety, innovation, and growth. Haakon Lenz, the current Chief Operating Officer, is set to take over as CEO on January 1, 2025.

During his leadership, Schou played a transformative role in shaping Wilhelmsen Ship Management into a globally respected entity known for its forward-thinking approach, responsibility, and reliability in ship management. He underscored the importance of adapting to new regulations and the rising emphasis on decarbonization, highlighting the critical role of ship managers in this evolving landscape. Schou reflected on the strides the company made in modernizing ship operations, improving safety for seafarers, protecting the environment, and boosting efficiency. He expressed pride in Wilhelmsen’s leading role in these areas alongside its customers, noting that the industry is on a long-term journey toward greater sustainability.

Schou also shared his gratitude for leading the company’s talented and dedicated team, crediting the success of Wilhelmsen Ship Management to its people-centric culture and commitment to doing things the right way. He expressed confidence in the company’s future under Lenz’s leadership.

As regulatory pressures on the maritime industry increase, the role of experienced ship managers is becoming more vital to help shipowners operate their fleets in a compliant and cost-efficient manner. Haakon Lenz, a veteran maritime leader with extensive operational and technical experience, is well-prepared to lead the company into its next phase. Lenz began his career at DNV before transitioning to ship management with V.Ships Norway. He joined Wilhelmsen Ship Management in 2008 and has held several leadership roles, including Vice President for Region Europe and the U.S. As Chief Operating Officer, Lenz oversaw the company’s global operations.

Lenz expressed eagerness to build on the strong foundation established by Schou, sharing his enthusiasm for working with Wilhelmsen’s talented team to continue the company’s focus on operational excellence, sustainability, and growth. He emphasized that people would remain at the heart of the company’s mission as they support customers in navigating future challenges.

Lenz’s technical background as a naval architect and his hands-on experience in ship management and global operations position him well to uphold Wilhelmsen’s tradition of delivering world-class ship management services. As Lenz steps into the CEO role, Schou will continue to support him as a senior advisor for six months, ensuring a smooth transition for customers, employees, and stakeholders.

In 2025, Wilhelmsen Ship Management will celebrate 50 years of providing services under Wilhelmsen Group ownership. Building on the group’s maritime legacy, Lenz and his team will remain dedicated to delivering high-quality ship management services as the company moves forward.
