Deloitte Report Highlights Urgent Need for CEOs to Focus on Human Sustainability
Deloitte’s latest report, developed in partnership with Workplace Intelligence, underscores the growing expectation for CEOs to prioritize human sustainability, which involves creating value for employees by improving their health, skills, employability, and overall well-being.
Stakeholder Pressure: The report reveals that approximately 80% of CEOs feel pressure from various stakeholders to commit to human sustainability. This includes pressure from employees (82%), customers (78%), investors (78%), partners (77%), and board members (77%).
Support for Change: A significant 88% of leaders expressed a desire for their compensation to be linked to human sustainability metrics. Furthermore, 71% believe that leadership should be restructured if progress in this area is insufficient.
Perception Gaps: There is a notable disconnect between executive and employee perceptions. While 82% of executives believe their companies are making strides in human sustainability, only 56% of employees agree. Additionally, 90% of executives think their companies positively impact employee well-being, contrasted with only 60% of employees who share this sentiment.
The report indicates that only about one-third of workers saw improvements in their well-being last year, with physical (34%), mental (32%), financial (35%), and social (31%) well-being lagging. This contrasts sharply with over 70% of executives who believe their employees’ well-being has improved.
The report also highlights the need for greater transparency. While 82% of executives believe companies should publicly report their human sustainability metrics, 81% admit their organizations are not doing enough in this area. Interestingly, 61% of C-suite executives would accept a pay cut to work for a company that advances human sustainability.
A related article from Deloitte India reveals that 88% of organizations believe sustainability regulations will have a direct impact on their businesses, indicating a broader recognition of the importance of sustainable practices.
The Deloitte report calls for urgent action from leadership to bridge the gap between executive perception and employee experience, ensuring that human sustainability becomes a core component of corporate strategy and culture.
