The World Shipping Council (WSC) has ushered in a new era of leadership with the appointment of Joe Kramek as its President and CEO, succeeding the esteemed John Butler upon his forthcoming retirement at the end of July. In assuming his new role, Kramek pledges to uphold the WSC’s commitment to fostering a socially responsible, environmentally sustainable, safe, and secure global maritime trade.

John Butler, whose tenure as President and CEO spanned from 2015, reflects on his journey with the WSC with pride and satisfaction. He expresses confidence in Kramek’s leadership, envisioning a flourishing future for the organization under his stewardship. Butler extended his best wishes to Kramek and the entire WSC team for continued success.

Kramek’s extensive experience and distinguished career, spanning both the maritime sector and government service, position him as a formidable leader poised to steer the WSC into its next phase of evolution. Kramek’s professional journey includes an illustrious 28-year tenure as a commissioned officer with the U.S. Coast Guard, where he honed his expertise at sea and served as the Chief of Maritime, International, and Environmental Law. Notably, his leadership extended to the international stage, where he spearheaded the U.S. Delegation to the International Maritime Organization’s Legal Committee, leaving an indelible mark on global maritime governance.

Kramek acknowledged the pivotal contributions of his predecessor, John Butler, in steering the WSC through unprecedented challenges and transforming it into a global trade association of repute. Expressing gratitude for the foundation laid by Butler, Kramek articulates his vision for the future, stating, “I am deeply honored to assume the role of President and CEO at the World Shipping Council. Together with the dedicated team at WSC, I look forward to addressing the evolving needs of the shipping industry and continuing to drive positive change.”
