Kathleen Quirk Appointed CEO of Freeport-McMoRan
On Tuesday, US copper miner Freeport-McMoRan (NYSE: FCX) made an announcement about Kathleen Quirk’s appointment as President and Chief Executive Officer, slated to take effect at the annual meeting of shareholders on June 11 this year.
Assuming the helm of executive management, Quirk will report directly to the FCX board of directors, while Richard Adkerson will continue in his role as Chairman, facilitating a seamless leadership transition, according to the company’s statement.
Dusty McCoy, lead independent director of the board, remarked that Kathleen has garnered the admiration of the board and the Freeport family. Reflecting on his tenure, Adkerson shared that leading Freeport as CEO for over two decades has been a privilege and a responsibility he cherished deeply.
The succession plan marks a significant moment for Freeport, as the board seeks to identify a worthy successor to Adkerson, a stalwart figure who has steered the company since 2003 and was honored last year with induction into the National Mining Hall of Fame.
Quirk’s journey with Freeport spans over three decades, commencing in 1989. She has traversed various spheres within the company, including tax, investor relations, corporate development, and treasury, before ascending to the position of chief financial officer in 2003. Her trajectory continued with her appointment as president of FCX in 2021, culminating in her recent inclusion on the board in 2023. A proud alumna of Louisiana State University, Quirk brings a wealth of experience and insight to her new role.
