Portugal holds the first place for working remotely among 111 countries worldwide, according to the rankings of the travel agency, Kayak. The destination has the highest final score in all categories, including the best weather conditions, a great abundance of entertainment options, low crime rates, and a low cost of living. Portugal also offers a digital nomadic visa, and many locals are fluent in English. For example, in Portugal, the long-term apartment rental is 523 dollars per month, while the monthly budget for local food is about 200 dollars. Furthermore, a double room at a hotel costs 132 dollars.
Spain is in second place, mainly due to the large percentage of restaurants and cafes per person, combined with high-speed internet, a large number of collaborative workplaces, and the distance work visa for freelancers. In Spain, the cost of a long-term apartment rental is 580 dollars, while a budget of 235 dollars per month is necessary for buying local food. At the same time, a double room at a hotel per night costs, on average, 143 dollars.
Romania completes the top three countries for remote working, mainly because it offers very attractive prices for long-term apartment rentals and good local food. For example, in Romania, the long-term apartment rental is, on average, 523 dollars per month, while the monthly budget for local food is about 155 dollars. Furthermore, a double room at a hotel costs, on average, 100 dollars.
Mauritius and Japan complete the top 5 countries for working remotely. In Mauritius, the long-term apartment rental is, on average, 214 dollars per month, while the monthly budget for local food is about 234 dollars. Furthermore, a double room at a hotel costs, on average, 321 dollars. In Japan, the long-term apartment rental is, on average, 511 dollars per month, while the monthly budget for local food is about 451 dollars. At the same time, a double room at a hotel costs, on average, 175 dollars.
Malta, Costa Rica, Panama, the Czech Republic, and Germany follow on the list. The rent for an apartment in Malta is about 800 dollars per month. In Costa Rica, the long-term apartment rental is, on average, 330 dollars per month, while the monthly budget for local food is about 220 dollars. Furthermore, a double room at a hotel costs, on average, 311 dollars. The rent for an apartment in Panama is about 440 dollars per month. The rent for an apartment in the Czech Republic is about 440 dollars per month. Lastly, the rent for an apartment in Germany is about 640 dollars per month.
It is worth mentioning that Greece ranked 23rd. Greece is a country with good weather, entertainment options, cultural wealth, and reasonable prices for long-term rental accommodation and restaurant food. Greece also recently announced the start of visas for digital nomads.
