Global Covid-19 Relief: Some Of The Largest Donations Against Coronavirus
The ongoing spread of COVID-19 has disrupted lives, livelihoods, communities, and businesses worldwide. Organizations around the world are coming together and finding innovative ways to minimize the impact on public health and to limit disruptions to economies and supply chains. Some of the biggest names in the world of business have donated to fund research, pay for personal protective equipment for hospitals, and help victims suffering during the Covid-19 crisis.
Here is a list of who’s donated.
- Jack Dorsey, Twitter’s chief executive, has pledged to donate $1 billion to fund coronavirus research to help “disarm this pandemic”. Dorsey, who co-founded Twitter in 2006 and went on to co-found payments company Square, tweeted on Tuesday that he was donating $1bn of Square shares to a charitable fund, called Start Small, to “fund global Covid-19 relief”. The donation was equivalent to about “28% of my wealth”. Dorsey, 43, has a fortune of about $3.9bn, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. It is by far the biggest single donation to the global fight to tackle the coronavirus pandemic.
- Ratan Tata: The Tata group announced a whopper of $197.37 million.
- Bill Gates, co-chairman and co-founder of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has contributed $100 million through his foundation to aid global detection, isolation, and treatment of the virus.
- Michael Dell, founder of Dell Technologies, and his wife, Susan Dell, are donating $100 million through their charitable foundation to combat the effects of Covid-19.
- Azim Premji: For Covid-19, Azim Premji Foundation, Wipro and Wipro Enterprises committed $148 million.
- Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF): One of Greece’s largest and most generous charitable organizations, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), announced that it is donating a stunning one hundred million dollars,$100 million to alleviate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The first area of focus is medical research. Knowing that combating the virus effectively on the global scale will require both new vaccines and new treatments, SNF will provide support for research efforts focused on effective testing, treatment, and prevention. the SNF has provided an immediate grant of $3 million to The Rockefeller University to support the world-class institution’s round-the-clock research related to COVID-19.
- Mukesh Ambani: Mukesh Ambani, through Reliance Industries, contributed $65.79 million.
- Paytm: For Covid-19, Paytm committed $65.79 million.
- Patrice Motsepem, South African billionaire, founder and chairman of African Rainbow Minerals will donate $57 million to help the pandemic. The money will be channelled through the government to build water, health and education facilities.
- Michael Bloomberg, majority owner and co-founder of Bloomberg L.P. Bloomberg Philanthropies, will donate $40 million to fight the spread of the virus in Africa and low- and middle-income countries around the world.
- Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, founders of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, are donating $30 million. $25 million will go to the Covid-19 Therapeutics Accelerator, while $5 million will go to relief efforts in the San Francisco Bay Area.
- Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, has donated $25 million to start the Amazon Relief Fund, which will offer grants of $400 to $5,000 to independent delivery companies, gig workers in the Amazon Flex program, and seasonal employees.
- Steve Ballmer: Ballmer has put $25 million into Covid-19 efforts.
- Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T): For Covid-19 too, Larsen & Toubro Limited committed $19.74 million.
- Jack Ma, co-founder and former executive chairman of Alibaba Group, has pledged $14 million through his Ma Foundation to help develop a coronavirus vaccine. He’s also donated 1.1 million testing kits, six million masks, and 60,000 protective suits and face shields to 54 African countries; 500,000 testing kits and 1 million face masks to the U.S.; 1 million masks to Japan; and 1.8 million masks and 100,000 testing kits to Europe, including Italy and Spain.
- JSW Group: For Covid-19, JSW Group committed $13.16 million.
- Anil Agarwal: For Covid-19, Anil Agarwal’s Vedanta group committed $13.16 million.
- Bajaj group: For Covid-19, Bajaj group committed $13.16 million.
- Gautam Adani: Port pasha Gautam Adani’s $13.16 million, given through the Adani foundation.
- Remo Ruffini, chairman, and CEO of luxury sportswear brand Moncler, donated US$10.9 million to the hard-hit region of Lombardy, Italy, for the construction of a new hospital.
- Ralph Lauren has pledged $10 million to support healthcare workers, high-risk patients and also fellow American fashion designers that are suffering financially as a result of the pandemic. Part of these funds will go towards making 25,000 gowns and 250,000 masks for medical staff.
- Media mogul Oprah Winfrey has pledged $10 million to help Americans affected by COVID-19 across the country and in places she grew up. Part of the donation—$1 million—will go to a new initiative called America’s Food Fund, which will help feed local communities.
- Uday Kotak: Kotak Mahindra Bank and its managing director Uday Kotak announced $7.89 million.
- Godrej group: For Covid-19 too, Godrej group committed $7.76 million.
- Sajjan Jindal: The Sajjan Jindal-led group is helping with PPE for healthcare workers and Jindal Steel and Power with $3.29 million.
- Akshay Kumar: $3.29 million
- Fashion legend Giorgio Armani donated about $2.2 million to hospitals in Milan, Rome, Bergamo, Piacenza and Versilia as well as to the Italian civil protection agency, which is coordinating the country’s response to the outbreak.
- George and Amal Clooney: George and Amal Clooney have joined the many celebrities giving generously to coronavirus relief efforts, with the actor and human rights lawyer donating more than $1 million to six organizations.
