Ranked: The Happiest (And Unhappiest) States In America, 2019

As the song says, “don’t worry, be happy,” it turns out those living in Hawaii and Utah are the happiest. Interestingly enough, Hawaii has been crowned the happiest state America for 2019, according to WalletHub, while Utah and Minnesota placed 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

The 2019 rankings placed California in 4th ahead of New Jersey into 5th; while Idaho ranked 6th and Massachusetts 7th. Overall, among the top ten Happiest States in the U.S. for 2019, the 8th, 9th, and 10th positions are held by Maryland, Nebraska, and Connecticut.

To determine where Americans are the happiest, the finance publication WalletHub examined the 50 states across 31 key metrics, ranging from depression rate to sports participation rate to income growth. The rankings were primarily based on three factors: emotional and physical wellbeing, work environment, and community and environment.

At the lower end of the index, West Virginia was ranked as the unhappiest state in America for 2019. It was followed by Arkansas, Alaska, Mississippi, and Louisiana. The top 10 least happy state in America was rounded out Kentucky, Alabama, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Missouri.
