Way to go Lady Gaga or Born This Way- Is she still bankrupt?

The eccentric star, Lady Gaga fans bought up 1.11 million copies (1,108,000) of her much-hyped release “Born This Way” during the week ended May 29. That’s the biggest sales week since 50 Cent’s “The Massacre” sold 1.14 million copies in March 2005, Taylor Swift’s “Speak Now,” sold 1.01 million copies last November but still Way to go for Lady Gaga as N Sync holds the first-week sales milestone with 2.4 million copies for “No Strings Attached” in 2000. Sales were boosted by a 99-cent promotion at Amazon.com (AMZN). Apple (AAPL) was charging $11.99 for “Born This Way.”

The low price (at Amazon) drew attention, created technical problems and helped sell an estimated 440,000 downloads, according to an estimate posted on the website of trade magazine Billboard. That appeared to be about double the number of albums sold by Apple Inc.’s iTunes Store, which normally commands a dominant share of paid digital downloads, The Wall Street Journal reported.

In the UK, Born This Way replaced Adele’s 21 at No 1 with the biggest opening sales week of the year, outselling the entire top 10 combined.

Gaga told The Financial Times: “I put everything in the show, and I actually went bankrupt after the first extension of The Monster Ball.

“And it was funny because I didn’t know! And I remember I called everybody and said, “Why is everyone saying I have no money? This is ridiculous, I have five number one singles – and they said, ‘Well, you’re three million dollars in debt.'”

She said: “It’s honestly true that money means nothing to me. The only big things I’ve purchased are my dad’s heart valve and a Rolls-Royce for my parents, for their anniversary.

“And that was only because my dad had a Lady Gaga licence plate on our old car and it was making me crazy because he was getting followed everywhere, so I bought him a new car.”

It looks like, The fact that the album was ONLY 99 cents this is why she sold so many. That million is not nearly because there are all of those die hards waiting for the album itself.

Actually the reason why the album was $0.99 was because amazon was selling them to promote their new cloud service. Amazon still payed full price from Gaga’s team and actually lost money. I do think she still would of gotten extremely close to the 1 million dollar mark without the 99 cent thing anyways so it doesn’t really matter to me. It was the most anticipated album of the year, by the way!
