BT Group Appoints Jon James as CEO of BT Business Amid Strategic Shift
BT Group plc has named Jon James as the new CEO of BT Business, reinforcing its commitment to the UK market. Alongside his appointment, he will also join the company’s Executive Committee. His tenure begins on March 3, 2025.
Bringing nearly three decades of experience in the European telecommunications, media, and technology (TMT) sector, James has held leadership roles across the UK and Scandinavia. Most recently, he served as CEO of Denmark’s leading telecom provider, Nuuday, where he spearheaded its transformation and return to growth since 2021. Prior to that, he collaborated with top private equity firms between 2019 and 2021, led Tele2 Netherlands as CEO from 2017 to 2019, and served as Chief Operating Officer at Swedish cable operator Com Hem between 2014 and 2016. Earlier in his career, he held senior positions at Virgin Media from 2007 to 2013.
BT Group’s CEO, Allison Kirkby, expressed enthusiasm about James joining the company, emphasizing his extensive experience in the UK and European telecom sectors. She highlighted his expertise in guiding businesses through transformation, viewing his leadership as a key asset in BT Business’s renewed UK-centric focus.
James conveyed his excitement about stepping into the role, describing BT Business as a powerhouse in B2B telecommunications. He noted its strong customer relationships and advanced technological capabilities, expressing eagerness to collaborate with Kirkby, Bas Burger, and the BT Business team to strengthen the division for customers, shareholders, and the UK economy.
Earlier this financial year, BT announced plans to streamline its international operations, potentially through partnerships, to solidify its UK-focused strategy. With James assuming leadership of BT Business, the current CEO, Bas Burger, will shift his focus entirely to optimizing the company’s global operations and exploring strategic options for that division.
Kirkby acknowledged Burger’s contributions to BT Business, praising his deep industry expertise and extensive network of partnerships. She emphasized that his leadership would be instrumental as the company evaluates future opportunities for its international segment.
With these leadership changes, BT Group is positioning itself for a more streamlined, UK-centric future while leveraging global expertise to enhance its operations.
