DHL Reinforces Commitment to China’s Role in Global Trade Amid Policy Shifts

China’s recent push to bolster foreign trade through new policies has created fresh growth opportunities for logistics companies like DHL, which remains steadfast in its commitment to the Chinese market, according to Tobias Meyer, CEO of DHL Group. Despite global economic challenges, Meyer highlighted China’s pivotal role in DHL’s global strategy, with plans to continue investing in facilities, e-commerce, and sustainability initiatives across the country.

Meyer noted that China’s deep manufacturing value chain and vast production capacity make it an indispensable player in global trade. He emphasized that DHL’s confidence in the Chinese market is unwavering, underscoring the company’s intention to grow its operations and workforce in the region. As one of Asia’s leading economies, Meyer observed, China continues to drive regional economic growth, fueled by its scale, consumption demand, and integrated supply chains. He also pointed out that China’s ongoing efforts to open up its economy would enhance the business environment over time.

Despite global trade tensions, protectionism, and other economic headwinds, Meyer remarked that China’s trade growth continues to outpace the global average, particularly in its exchanges with Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. While some manufacturers are diversifying production outside of China, many still rely heavily on Chinese components. Meyer stressed that China’s extensive manufacturing infrastructure ensures its continued relevance, affirming that “the next ‘China’ is still China.”

Joe Ngai, chairman of McKinsey China, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that there is no substitute for the Chinese market, whether in terms of product demand or as a critical node in global supply chains. Supporting this, an Asian Development Bank report revealed that China accounts for over 60% of Asia’s economic growth and contributes significantly to regional trade in goods and services.

Over recent years, China’s expanding manufacturing and consumer base has further cemented its role in DHL’s global operations. The company has invested over 2 billion yuan (approximately $270 million) to upgrade and expand its logistics infrastructure in key regions, including the Yangtze River Delta and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Meyer explained that DHL is well-positioned to offer comprehensive logistics solutions for e-commerce platforms through air, sea, and road transport, with e-commerce expected to remain a significant growth driver in China.

Zhang Jianping, deputy director of the academic committee at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation, noted that China’s ongoing reforms to enhance the business environment have made it increasingly attractive to foreign investors. He emphasized that the country will continue to act as a stabilizing force in international supply chains and a key driver of global economic growth.

Looking ahead, Meyer outlined several sectors where DHL anticipates significant growth in China over the next decade. These include e-commerce, healthcare, automotive, and green energy. He highlighted China’s position as the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer and exporter, which aligns with global decarbonization goals. DHL aims to support the rapidly expanding EV sector by providing tailored logistics solutions.

Meyer also reiterated DHL’s long-term vision for China, describing it as one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing logistics markets. As the country continues to evolve economically and pursue ambitious environmental targets, DHL plans to expand its presence and invest further in infrastructure to meet these demands. Meyer affirmed the company’s intent to act as a bridge connecting China to the rest of the world and expressed confidence in the market’s long-term potential.

China’s prominence in global trade and its capacity for innovation remain central to DHL’s strategic plans. Despite challenges posed by a slow global recovery and rising trade tensions, Meyer conveyed optimism about DHL’s future in the Chinese market, reiterating the company’s steadfast commitment to supporting the country’s growth trajectory and sustainable development.
