Takeshi Okada Appointed New CEO of Warner Music Japan
Takeshi Okada has been named the new President and CEO of Warner Music Japan, with his official start date set for December 2nd. He will report to Simon Robson, who is currently overseeing Warner Music Group’s recorded business in the Asia-Pacific region until a permanent successor is found.
Simon Robson expressed enthusiasm about Okada’s appointment, noting that his extensive industry experience and respected reputation made him an ideal choice to lead the company’s operations in Japan. He remarked that Okada’s leadership came at a time when Warner Music was focusing on accelerating its growth in the world’s second-largest music market. Robson also emphasized that Kaz Kobayashi and Dr. Kenji Kitatani would assist in ensuring a smooth leadership transition, underscoring the company’s commitment to expanding its presence in the Japanese market.
Okada joined Warner Music Japan after serving as managing director of EMI Records Japan, a Universal Music Group label, in 2018. During his time there, he oversaw significant successes driven by major artists such as singer-songwriter Yumi Matsutoya and the rock band Mrs. GREEN APPLE. Prior to that, he spent over a decade at Universal Music Japan, where he played a key role in the company’s digital marketing efforts and contributed to its success in the streaming era.
Reflecting on his new role, Okada shared his excitement about leading Warner Music Japan at a pivotal time in its evolution. He expressed his honor in succeeding Kaz Kobayashi, who had built a reputation as a strong advocate for artists within the industry. Okada highlighted the company’s ambitious growth plans for the rapidly changing Japanese market and stated his commitment to driving Warner Music Japan’s continued success and development.
Okada will work closely with Kaz Kobayashi during the leadership transition following Kobayashi’s announcement of his decision to step down. Both leaders will be supported by Dr. Kenji Kitatani, the newly appointed Chairman of Warner Music Japan.
