Leadership Transition at Allegiant Air: Gregory Anderson to Succeed Maurice Gallagher as CEO
Allegiant Travel Company announced on Thursday that Gregory C. Anderson, currently the president, will assume the role of CEO in September, succeeding the long-serving Maurice Gallagher. Gallagher, who has been a pivotal figure in the company’s growth, will continue to serve as the chairman of the board.
The Las Vegas-based company also revealed that Anderson will maintain his current title of president and will be appointed to the board of directors. Anderson’s career includes significant experience in accounting, having worked at Ernst & Young and US Airways before joining Allegiant in 2010. His journey at Allegiant saw him ascend to various executive positions, including that of chief financial officer.
Gallagher expressed in a prepared statement that Anderson was effectively already performing the duties of a CEO, and it was now appropriate to formalize the role. Gallagher, now 74, has been instrumental in transforming Allegiant into one of the largest ultra-low-cost carriers in the United States, known for its affordable fares paired with numerous additional fees. He holds the largest stake in Allegiant, owning over 13% of the company’s shares.
Gallagher had initially stepped down from his CEO role in 2022, only to return just over a year later following the unexpected exit of his successor, John Redmond. Despite the announcement of this leadership transition, shares of Allegiant Travel experienced a minor dip, falling less than 1% in midday trading.
