How My First Business Failure Became a Stepping Stone to Success

Jim Cocks

Starting out as a business owner can feel a little like navigating uncharted waters with no map —a thrilling adventure fraught with risks and uncertainties. For many, the road to success is paved with setbacks and failures, seeing these failures as growth and learning however supports you to achieve success. Reflecting on my own experience, I’ve come to realise that my first business failure (and the many there after) was not a defeat but rather a pivotal moment of growth and transformation—a catalyst that propelled me towards greater success.

My first business venture was an online store. I wanted to build a space for artists and local furniture makers to promote and sell their work. I spent months creating a website, building a brand, and investing in tech. When it launched with no sales, it was easy to succumb to feelings of disappointment and frustration. Yet, amidst the wreckage of shattered dreams, I discovered a profound truth: the failures pointed me in a different direction, gave me a new pathway to areas I need to grow and evolve in to create the successful company I run today. And, despite it all, I really loved tech!

Cultivating Resilience in the Face of Adversity

Failure has a remarkable way of testing your resilience and persistence. When you fail in business and decide to start again it can be quite daunting, however I saw it as a great new challenge. Hey I failed once! What could be any worse? However, it was precisely during these moments of adversity that I discovered the depths of my resilience—the unwavering determination to persevere in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges. Through resilience, I learned that setbacks are not defeats but rather opportunities for growth and self-discovery.

Rethinking Success: A Shift in Perspective

I underwent a profound shift in perspective—one that forced me to reevaluate my definition of success. You see all these amazing business owners, Richard Branson, Gary V and wonder how they hell do their brains work! If only I could absorb some of that! Failure was the key, no longer defined by external markers of achievement or monetary gains, success became directly connected to personal growth and the pursuit of passion and purpose. Rising above the failure, training, seeking mentors, that was the pathway to where I wanted to be.

Embracing Adaptability and Innovation

One of the most valuable lessons I gleaned from was the importance of adaptability and innovation in navigating the ever-evolving landscape of entrepreneurship. In an era defined by rapid technological advancements and shifting consumer preferences, the ability to pivot and innovate is essential for survival. By embracing change and fostering a culture of innovation, I was able to transform setbacks into opportunities for reinvention and growth. I became a YouTube junkie, absorbing everything I could and ideas started to evolve.

Fostering a Growth Mindset

At the heart of every successful entrepreneur lies a growth mindset—a steadfast belief in the power of perseverance, learning, and continuous improvement. I also truly believe that when you love what you do, when you have a passion to succeed, when you make it the only option, the money will come. It might take a while, but as my first coach said to me “The energy you put out will eventually return”

In hindsight, my first business failure was not a setback but rather a springboard towards greater success. The failed Personal Training business, supplement business, consulting business that followed all taught me invaluable lessons about resilience, adaptability, and the transformative power of failure. I emerged stronger and more determined than ever before and built a 7 figure company. Today, I embrace failure not as a source of shame or defeat but as a powerful catalyst for personal and professional growth. For in the journey towards success, it is not the absence of failure but rather the ability to learn, adapt, and persevere that ultimately determines our fate.
