McMaster University Welcomes Omer Ahmed as Associate Vice-President and CFO
McMaster University has announced the appointment of Omer Ahmed as its Associate Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer, effective March 1, 2024.
Ahmed brings a wealth of experience in strategic financial management from his leadership roles at CPP Investments and CIBC. At CPP Investments, he oversaw systems and analytics, procurement, financial planning, corporate accounting, and management reporting for private assets, alongside a leadership role in the Internal Audit team. Similarly, at CIBC, Ahmed led finance teams across Capital Markets businesses, focusing on financial accounting, reporting, and valuation aspects.
Ahmed, a holder of an Honours Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Toronto, Chartered Accountant (CA), and Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designations, along with a Master’s certification from York University’s Schulich School of Business, is poised to build upon the strong foundation laid by Lilian Scime, the Interim CFO.
Saher Fazilat, Vice-President of Operations and Finance, expresses enthusiasm about Ahmed’s appointment, highlighting his extensive experience in both private and public sectors and values that align with the university’s mission. Fazilat emphasizes Ahmed’s pivotal role in supporting the university’s financial plans and strategies for the future.
Fazilat extends gratitude to Scime for her dedication and expertise in overseeing the university’s financial affairs during the transition period. As Ahmed assumes leadership, he will work closely with the Financial Affairs department, ensuring an enterprise-wide approach to financial decision-making aligned with the institution’s strategic direction.
Fazilat acknowledges that Ahmed’s appointment comes at a critical time for McMaster University’s financial future. He expressed confidence in Ahmed and his team’s ability to navigate challenges and maintain the university’s financial health. The selection of Ahmed followed a thorough search process initiated in June 2023, with a diverse selection committee identifying him as the preferred candidate for the role.
