Windows Phone 7 on Groupon- sign of how bad WP7 phones sales are

Now you can see Windows Phone 7 handsets selling? Microsoft Store in Chicago is using Groupon to offer 50% off on two of the phones Samsung Focus on AT&T and HTC HD7. Both Samsung Focus on AT&T and HTC HD7 are on sale for $49 instead of the usual $99. The limited-time discount runs through Wednesday. Microsoft has offered deals in the past, including free phones through the Microsoft Store and one penny phones through Amazon back in November.

But a month ago, Microsoft suggested consumer demand was sky high when it announced sales of 1.5 million handsets within two months after the WP7 launch. Last week, LG executive James Choi said his company’s sales of WP7 phones were disappointing. Now this is being done by individual Microsoft stores so if you don’t have one of those nearby, then you probably won’t see this.

I think this is a good idea. I mean the discount is nice, but you can get that price all over the web. The key here is visibility. A lot of non-techies will see this groupon (mostly women) and get to read about how amazing the phone is.
