Why Christopher Riegg Looks Beyond the Balance Sheet

After more than three decades in financial services, Christopher Riegg has learned that numbers alone can’t explain some of the most important business decisions. Behind every acquisition, financing decision, or ownership transition, a business owner weighs financial opportunities against years of personal investment.

That understanding has shaped Riegg’s career, from his early days in banking to his current role as Founder and Partner of Promontory Strategy Group in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

With 35 years of experience and a background that includes advising more than 200 business owners and executive leadership teams, Christopher Riegg has developed a perspective on what it takes to guide privately held companies through major decisions.

A Career That Started in Milwaukee and Never Lost Its Roots

Riegg grew up in West Allis, Wisconsin, and has maintained strong ties to the Milwaukee area and the upper Midwest throughout his life. His interest in business and finance led him to the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting. He later completed a Master’s degree in Corporate Finance at Marquette University.

He also earned two professional credentials: Certified Public Accountant in 1995 and Chartered Financial Analyst in 1999.

He began his financial services career on June 3, 1991, at Bank One. Over the following years, he gained experience across banking, capital markets, and investment banking, eventually holding leadership positions at J.P. Morgan Chase, U.S. Bank Capital Markets, and L. William Teweles & Co.

These roles gave him corporate finance experience and introduced him to the decisions business owners face when managing growth, financing operations, and planning for their companies’ future.

For Riegg, listening carefully and asking questions became just as important as understanding the financial information presented to him.

Where Business Gets Personal

A defining moment in Riegg’s career came in 2004, when he cofounded Promontory Point Capital, a Milwaukee investment banking firm focused on privately held and family-owned businesses.

The move let him work directly with owners and leadership teams rather than focus solely on financial transactions.

Over the next two decades, his advisory experience included business sales, acquisitions, debt refinancing, restructuring, and recapitalizations. He also helped companies arrange institutional debt and private equity capital.

Much of this work involved businesses in manufacturing, distribution, business services, and technology, industries that play an important role in the Midwest economy.

Through these engagements, Riegg encountered owners preparing for retirement, pursuing acquisitions, or arranging financing for future growth. While the financial questions often overlapped, the personal circumstances behind each decision differed.

His experience reinforced the importance of understanding an owner’s priorities before evaluating possible solutions. In a family business, ownership decisions can involve relationships, personal goals, and the future of a company built over decades.

A New Chapter After Three Decades in Finance

In 2025, Christopher Riegg founded Promontory Strategy Group to provide dedicated strategic and financial guidance to business owners and executive leadership teams.

The new firm marked another stage in a career increasingly focused on helping owners evaluate options before making major commitments.

As Founder and Partner, Riegg helps clients with acquisition strategies, financing initiatives, succession planning, and ownership transitions.

His approach reflects lessons developed over decades of working with privately held companies. Rather than viewing every business challenge as a transaction, he considers the broader circumstances surrounding an owner’s goals.

Listening carefully, following through on commitments, and maintaining professional relationships remain central to his working philosophy. He also emphasizes learning from clients and colleagues, regardless of how much experience someone brings to the conversation.

35 Years of Experience, and Still Asking Questions

Alongside his advisory work, Riegg has made sharing industry knowledge a regular part of his professional life.

Through Promontory Perspectives and Riegg Insights, he discusses business ownership, corporate finance, leadership, and the challenges that can arise during ownership transitions.

His writing and video content draw on questions he’s encountered throughout his career, including how owners prepare for succession and what companies should consider when evaluating acquisition opportunities.

He also draws inspiration from outside finance. Books such as The Carpenter by Jon Gordon and Slow Down to the Speed of Joy by Matthew Kelly have influenced his thinking about leadership, relationships, and personal priorities.

Riegg values curiosity, thoughtful conversations, and recognizing that experience doesn’t eliminate the need to keep learning. These qualities continue to shape how he approaches both leadership and his work with business owners.

The Things That Matter Beyond the Office

Outside the office, Riegg remains closely connected to Milwaukee. He volunteers with the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry and Stars and Stripes Honor Flight of Wisconsin, which honors military veterans.

He also enjoys spending time with his wife, Kim, and their two adult children, following the Milwaukee Brewers, and staying active through Peloton rides.

Family, faith, and community involvement balance the demands of his professional life.

More than 35 years after starting his career at Bank One, Riegg continues to emphasize relationships, curiosity, and sound professional judgment.

His career illustrates how financial expertise can develop alongside a deeper understanding of business ownership. For Riegg, the work remains centered on helping people consider important decisions with greater clarity, while continuing to learn from the owners and leaders he meets along the way.
