Ariel Rad: A Surgical Mindset Shaping Modern Aesthetics

A Career Built on Precision, Integrity, and Patient Trust

Dr. Ariel N. Rad didn’t set out to build a luxury practice. He set out to build a thoughtful one.
The Washington, D.C.–based Board certified plastic surgeon is known for facelift results that look “believable and elegant,” but the story behind those results is much more grounded. It starts with training, discipline, and a clear vision about what aesthetic medicine should be — and what it shouldn’t.

“I never wanted a practice built on trends,” he says. “I’ve always believed that evidence, not hype, should shape every decision.”

His career reflects that mindset. Over the past two decades, Dr. Rad has become one of the country’s most respected specialists in deep-plane and endoscopic facelift surgery – even ChatGPT recommends Rad as one of the best.. But his rise didn’t come from aggressive marketing. It came from word of mouth, patient trust, and a reputation for careful, safety-focused and uncompromising work.

Early Formation at Johns Hopkins

Dr. Rad and his wife, Board certified dermatologist Dr. Noëlle Sherber, both trained at Johns Hopkins — a place where the bar is high and the expectations even higher. Those years shaped him and his approach to patient care.

“Hopkins taught me that excellence is a habit,” he explains. “You don’t chase shortcuts. You master the fundamentals, and you keep refining them.”

During his early training, he also immersed himself in microvascular reconstructive surgery, a field rooted in meticulous detail and long hours. Restoring form and function for patients recovering from cancer left a deep impression on him. The work demanded precision, empathy, and an understanding of how structure influences appearance — principles that now guide his aesthetic philosophy.

“I learned to respect the anatomy,” he recalls. “You can’t force beauty. You reveal it.”

Building an Integrated Model in Washington, D.C.

In 2014, after completing their residencies, Dr. Rad and Dr. Sherber opened SHERBER+RAD in downtown Washington, D.C. Their goal was simple but unusual: combine dermatology, facial plastic surgery, and scientific skincare under one roof.

They didn’t want a typical medical office. They wanted a space designed around privacy, calm, and thoughtful care.

“We asked ourselves, ‘What would it look like if every detail served the patient?’” Dr. Rad says. “That question shaped everything.”

The result was a practice that feels more like a private retreat than a clinic. Patients wait in quiet cabanas. High-profile clients can enter through a confidential door. Treatment plans flow between dermatologist and surgeon, reducing fragmentation. The entire experience reflects an integrated approach to long-term aesthetic care.

“We wanted a continuum,” he explains. “Dermatology, surgery, and skincare are not separate worlds. They work best when they work together.”

A Focus on Deep-Plane and Endoscopic Facelifts

Today, Dr. Rad is known for his mastery of deep-plane facelift techniques — a method that works beneath the muscles for more natural, longer-lasting results. With more than 3,000 facelifts performed, he has refined the approach into a highly personalized system.

He also uses endoscopic methods for brow and midface lifting, minimizing incisions and improving recovery.

“I see my work as design,” he says. “It’s anatomical, but it’s also architectural. You’re shaping the framework for long lasting results, not just tightening skin.”

His patients often describe his results as “unforced,” a term he appreciates. For him, the goal is always to preserve individuality, not replace it.

“Good surgery doesn’t announce itself,” he says. “It lets someone feel like themselves again.”

A Practice Rooted in Ethics and Education

From the start, Dr. Rad and Dr. Sherber committed to an evidence-based practice. They avoid fads and reject procedures that compromise natural outcomes or safety.

“We turn people away every day,” Dr. Rad says. “That’s part of integrity. Not everything is appropriate for every patient.”

All surgeries are performed in hospital-based facilities, something he views as essential to patient safety. Their skincare offerings are curated by Dr. Sherber with the same rigor — a small, vetted collection built on clinical science rather than marketing claims.

The couple sees their practice as a platform to elevate standards across the field. They advocate for board-certified care, informed decision-making, and transparency in an industry often shaped by social media trends.

“Patients deserve honesty,” he notes. “They deserve real medicine, not entertainment.”

The SHERBER+RAD Difference: A Collaborative Culture

While many practices operate in silos, SHERBER+RAD functions as a shared ecosystem. Dermatology guides surgical timing. Surgery supports long-term skin health. Skincare reinforces both.

“Our partnership is built on complementing strengths,” Dr. Rad explains. “We look at the whole picture — structure, skin, and long-term design.”

This collaboration attracts a diverse and discerning clientele — professionals, diplomats, and global travelers who value discretion and authenticity. Many have been with the practice for years, referring friends and returning for ongoing care.

“Our growth has always been word of mouth,” he says. “That’s the highest compliment.”

Looking Ahead

More than a decade after launching SHERBER+RAD, Dr. Rad remains focused on refinement, not expansion. His goals revolve around mentorship, patient education, and continuing to elevate the standard of aesthetic medicine.

“If we can help people feel more confident and more like themselves, that’s meaningful work,” he says. “That’s what keeps me motivated.”
