John Boyett: From the Gridiron to Real Estate Greatness

John Boyett

From Napa Roots to a New Kind of Teamwork

John Boyett’s story starts far from the skyscrapers of Los Angeles. He grew up in Napa, California, where his dad taught school and his mom worked as a paralegal. His childhood wasn’t defined by luxury, but by lessons in hard work. “My dad used to take me along when he managed apartment units,” Boyett recalls. “I didn’t realize it then, but that was my first exposure to real estate.”

Those early experiences—painting walls, fixing leaky faucets, and watching rent checks come in—planted the seeds of something bigger. But before he built a career in real estate, Boyett built another kind of life—one marked by sweat, grit, and football.

The Discipline of Sports and the Drive to Win

At Napa High School, Boyett became a local legend. He went on to play for the University of Oregon, where he started for four years and captained the team for three. “Football taught me how to handle pressure,” he says. “It’s all about discipline and teamwork—two things that translate perfectly into business.”

After college, Boyett entered the NFL, playing with the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos before heading north to the Canadian Football League’s Ottawa Redblacks. But even as his career on the field evolved, Boyett was already thinking ahead. “Athletics was never forever,” he explains. “I knew I’d need to take that same drive and put it into something that could last.”

That mindset would define his next chapter—one where leadership, strategy, and consistency mattered just as much as they did on game day.

A Fast Rise in Commercial Real Estate

Boyett’s transition from professional athlete to business leader was anything but typical. He entered commercial real estate with Matthews Real Estate Investment Services, quickly proving that success in one competitive arena could lead to success in another. Within a few years, he earned the Chairman’s Award (2022) and Sales Achievement Awards in 2020 and 2021.

His results spoke for themselves—millions in transactions closed, clients retained, and partnerships strengthened. “I approach every deal like a game plan,” Boyett says. “You study the market, understand the opponent, and execute with precision.”

That precision earned him a place at CBRE, the global leader in commercial real estate. In just one year, Boyett rose from First Vice President to Senior Vice President, heading the top Multifamily Investment Sales team in Los Angeles County. His group specializes in the acquisition, disposition, and repositioning of apartment buildings across Southern California.

“Real estate is a team sport,” Boyett says. “It takes coordination, communication, and trust. My goal is always to create value—whether that’s for a first-time investor or a family office managing a portfolio.”

Lessons From the Field to the Boardroom

Boyett often compares the intensity of a football season to the rhythm of a busy sales cycle. Both demand preparation, adaptability, and the ability to recover quickly from setbacks. “Battling through adversity and overcoming obstacles is what winners do,” he says. “It’s nothing special—it’s just what has to be done.”

That no-nonsense attitude defines his approach to client relationships. Boyett doesn’t believe in overpromising; he believes in delivering. “I learned early on that consistency builds trust,” he says. “The people who rely on you remember how you handle the tough moments, not just the easy wins.”

His clients range from high-net-worth individuals to syndicators and institutions. Yet, whether it’s a $2 million apartment sale or a $50 million repositioning strategy, Boyett keeps the focus on the people behind the numbers. “At the end of the day, it’s not just about property—it’s about people’s goals, legacies, and futures.”

Life Beyond the Deals

Outside the office, Boyett’s competitive edge softens into something more reflective. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Elizabeth, and their two young children. “Everything I do now is for them,” he says. “Success means giving them opportunities I never had.”

He still visits his hometown of Napa Valley, where the slower pace helps him recharge. “Being near the ocean or back home reminds me to stay grounded,” he adds. “No matter how busy life gets, those are the moments that matter.”

Golf remains his favorite pastime, a blend of focus and calm that mirrors his work philosophy. “Golf is like real estate,” he laughs. “You think long-term, stay patient, and make every move count.”

Leading the Next Generation of Real Estate Professionals

Today, Boyett’s team at CBRE is recognized for its market insight and high standards. They’ve handled more than $500 million in closed transactions, helping shape the skyline of Los Angeles County’s multifamily sector.

Still, Boyett sees his biggest role as a mentor. “I want to build a team that doesn’t just chase numbers but builds relationships,” he says. “That’s what lasts.”

As he continues to lead one of the most active investment teams in Southern California, his mission remains clear: to bring integrity, precision, and passion to every transaction.
