Leo Snetsinger: Building Platforms, Systems, and a Life of Purpose

How a Shrimp Farmer Became a DevOps Leader
Leo Snetsinger’s story doesn’t follow a straight line. He’s an engineer, a founder, a builder—and, yes, a shrimp farmer. His career in tech has spanned decades, but his approach has always stayed the same: solve big problems, stay curious, and keep moving forward.
“Hard work overcomes all obstacles,” Leo says. It’s a mindset that helped him grow from a teenager on his own at 16 to a senior platform engineer running cloud migrations and building tools for machine learning.
Early Life and the Drive to Learn
Leo was born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, and raised in towns like Plymouth and Crystal. His childhood was rough. By age 16, he was living independently. That experience shaped his work ethic.
“I had to work hard to be successful,” he says. “I’ve been on my own since I was a kid.”
That grit led him to IT early. He worked his way up the ladder through hands-on experience, later earning a Master’s in Information Systems Management. He was also inducted into the Sigma Beta Delta honor society—recognition for his academic performance.
Platform Engineering: From On-Prem to Kubernetes
Today, Leo is a Senior Platform and DevOps Engineer. He’s worked at companies like Jun Group, where he served as the sole platform owner.
Leo led their move from AWS ECS to Kubernetes (EKS). “It was a big shift,” he says. “We wanted full control and better scalability.” Later, he set the company up for a multi-cloud future with Google’s GKE. Along the way, he added GitOps tools like ArgoCD and Argo Rollouts to streamline deployment.
One of Leo’s favorite projects involved scaling machine learning workloads. “I built out an ML model deployment system using Ray Serve on Kubernetes,” he explains. “It needed to be fast, reliable, and easy for data scientists to use.”
What Is Leo Snetsinger Known For?
Leo is known for his ability to go deep technically while still seeing the big picture. He builds systems that last. “I wrote a truss software solution that’s still in use 20 years later,” he says.
He doesn’t rely on trends or hype. “I set my own standards,” he says. “You have to enjoy learning and solving problems.” That’s why he’s often the one who gets called in when something breaks or needs to scale.
Building Homeland Shrimp: A Different Kind of System
In recent years, Leo started something new. He founded Homeland Shrimp, an indoor shrimp farming business. But even here, he’s still thinking like a systems engineer.
The setup is complex: self-heating systems, titanium heat exchangers, closed-loop oxygenation, and optimized PEX tubing. “I used thermodynamic balance to keep it stable,” Leo explains. “It’s all about animal health and system efficiency.”
Farming shrimp might seem like a leap from cloud platforms. But to Leo, it’s another puzzle. “My career is also a major hobby,” he says. “I love the work I do, so it’s not hard to spend hours on it.”
Staying Grounded in Community
Despite his success in tech, Leo stays close to his roots. He volunteers with the Senior Community Services HOME program, helping with yard work for seniors in Sherburne County.
“I do leaf cleanup in fall and spring,” he says. “It helps people stay in their homes. That matters.”
He also supports local causes like Imagine Farm, a nonprofit that promotes sustainable agriculture and inclusive farming practices.
What Drives Leo Snetsinger?
Leo doesn’t dwell on failure, but he doesn’t ignore it either. “Failure is important to the learning process,” he says. One major mistake five years ago led him to stop drinking. “I haven’t had a drink since. It changed my life.”
Now, he keeps his head down and keeps building. “I just keep learning and growing,” he says. “Loving what you do helps.”
Why Leo’s Story Resonates
For anyone navigating tech or starting over, Leo’s story hits home. He didn’t have a perfect path. He didn’t rely on luck. He put in the hours, taught himself the tools, and built systems—both digital and biological—that work.
“Enjoy what you do and keep growing,” he says. “It’s simple, but it works.”
Leo Snetsinger is more than a platform engineer. He’s a systems thinker, a builder, and a reminder that success is often quiet, earned through persistence and purpose.
Whether he’s debugging a cluster or balancing a shrimp tank, Leo’s approach stays the same: solve the hard problems, do the work, and never stop learning.
