Paul Arrendell’s Journey: From Choir to Chief Quality Officer

How Music, Machines, and Mentorship Built a Top Leader
Paul Arrendell didn’t take the usual path to becoming a top executive. He was just as comfortable on stage singing in a choir as he was solving engineering problems. Over time, his mix of creativity, discipline, and problem-solving led him to the top of the medical manufacturing world.
With more than 30 years of experience, Paul has led quality and engineering at companies like Abbott Diagnostics, Wright Medical, KCI Medical, and Becton Dickinson. His work has touched everything from surgical devices to diagnostic systems used around the world.
“I’ve always believed in systems that work and people who care,” Paul says. “If you build both, you can solve almost anything.”
Engineering Roots and Leadership at UT Arlington
Paul earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington. He focused on Automatic Control Systems, a field that blends math, logic, and machine behavior.
But his college life wasn’t just about engineering.
“I was in the A Cappella Choir, Chamber Singers, Marching Band, and Jazz Band,” Paul recalls. “Those groups taught me teamwork and timing—two skills that matter just as much in business.”
He also joined Phi Delta Theta, the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, and the Order of Omega Honor Society. His involvement in Student Congress gave him early experience balancing technical work with leadership and communication.
“Student Congress was where I learned how to listen and how to lead without needing to shout,” he says. “That stayed with me.”
First Steps in Industry: Finding Purpose in Quality
After college, Paul moved into engineering roles in the medical device sector. Early on, he realized that his natural skills leaned toward problem-solving at the system level.
“I didn’t want to just fix broken parts—I wanted to fix broken processes,” he says.
That drive led him to Wright Medical, where he helped improve quality systems that impacted orthopedic tools and implants. From there, he joined KCI Medical, where he played a key role in maintaining high standards while scaling production globally.
“It was a crash course in how to keep quality strong under pressure,” Paul says. “Every process matters when someone’s health is on the line.”
Building a Global Voice: Quality Leadership at Abbott and BD
Paul’s next leap came at Abbott Diagnostics, a global company known for healthcare innovation. There, he began working on international quality and regulatory systems.
“That’s when I started thinking bigger. How do you design a system that works across dozens of countries, with different rules, cultures, and customers?”
He brought that thinking to Becton Dickinson (BD), where he led global quality strategy. The scale was massive—products, labs, and compliance checks happening around the world.
“You can’t rely on luck. You need a system that predicts problems before they happen—and a team that knows how to respond when they do.”
His calm, methodical approach earned him top recognition. He was featured in Fortune Magazine, named among San Antonio’s Top 25 Healthcare Technology Leaders, and honored as Top Chief Quality Officer of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals.
Mentorship and Giving Back: Supporting Future Engineers
Despite his demanding roles, Paul stays involved with his alma mater. He serves on the College of Engineering Advisory Board at UT Arlington and continues to mentor younger professionals.
“There’s a myth that leadership is about knowing everything. It’s not. It’s about building systems that learn, and people who feel safe asking questions.”
He often tells students not to aim for perfection—but for progress.
“The best advice I can give is this: own your work. When something breaks, don’t blame. Fix it, learn from it, and move on.”
What Makes a Great Quality Leader?
When asked what separates good leaders from great ones in medical manufacturing, Paul keeps it simple.
“Systems break. People panic. Leaders stay.”
