Top Nuclear-Armed Nations – Which countries have nuclear weapons?

nuclear weapon

Currently, nine nations possess nuclear weapons or are widely believed to have them. The first countries to develop nuclear arms were the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council: the United States, Russia, China, France, and the United Kingdom.

India and Pakistan, which have not signed the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT), have significantly advanced their nuclear capabilities over the years. Israel has not signed the NPT and has never officially confirmed the existence of its nuclear arsenal; however, it is widely accepted that the country possesses such weapons. North Korea joined the NPT in 1985 but withdrew from the treaty in 2003, citing U.S. aggression as the reason. Since then, North Korea has conducted a series of nuclear tests, showcasing its capabilities.

Russia and the US still hold almost 90% of all nuclear weapons. However, China’s nuclear program is growing faster than any other country. Since 2023, its arsenal has expanded by 100 new nukes per year, reaching 600 in 2025, making it the world’s third-largest stockpile.
