Market Explainers

Meta is reportedly considering a $10 billion investment in Scale AI.

Meta

Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) is exploring the possibility of making a substantial investment in Scale AI, a promising artificial intelligence (AI) startup. Scale AI offers data labeling services that enable companies to effectively train machine-learning models and counts prominent organizations such as Microsoft Corp. and OpenAI among its clientele. The company has positioned itself as an important player in the generative AI sector, recently achieving a valuation of $13.8 billion following a funding round in the spring of 2024, in which it successfully raised $1 billion, with Meta participating as one of the investors.

Should discussions proceed as anticipated, this investment could surpass $10 billion and would represent Meta’s most significant external commitment to AI to date. This shift reflects a broader strategy, as the company has primarily focused on its internal research initiatives. CEOWORLD magazine has reached out to both Meta and Scale AI for their insights, and we await their responses.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg has consistently emphasized the importance of AI within the company’s priorities, having announced plans in January to allocate up to $65 billion towards AI-related projects within the year.
