Preserving the Past, Uplifting the Future: The Enduring Vision of James F. Comley

James F. Comley

James F. Comley’s journey into the elevator industry began more than 70 years ago, following his service in the Navy. Starting as a mechanic’s helper, he developed a fascination with elevators’ mechanical precision and their crucial role in modern infrastructure. That early curiosity sparked a career defined by experience, leadership, and a lifelong commitment to both safety and mentorship.

The Founding of Embree Elevator

In 1973, James and his wife, Virginia, purchased Embree Elevator, setting out to shape it into a respected full-service elevator company. Their vision focused on business growth grounded in public safety, reliable systems, and personal service. Under James’s leadership, Embree Elevator developed from its millwright origins into a thriving regional provider known for excellence in elevator maintenance and service.

Guided by Principles and Perseverance

Throughout his career, James has responded to changes in technology, regulations, and economic pressures. What kept him grounded was a clear commitment to quality and the people behind the work. One of the most significant shifts came when he transitioned Embree Elevator from millwright work to comprehensive elevator solutions. This bold move helped move the company forward. His strategic thinking and resilience continue to inspire those around him.

An Advocate for Industry and Safety

James F. Comley’s influence reaches far beyond Embree Elevator. He served for over two decades on the Massachusetts Board of Elevator Regulations and was appointed Chairman in 2006. His advocacy for safety standards and mentorship of younger professionals helped shape industry practices across the state. As a James F. Comley elevator industry veteran, he has been honored for both his technical knowledge and civic leadership.

Legacy in Preservation and Education

Driven by a love for craftsmanship and storytelling, James co-founded the Elevator Museum, a unique institution dedicated to elevator history preservation. The museum’s motto, “Preserving the past, uplifting the future,” reflects his personal philosophy. He continues to mentor young technicians, often returning to job sites even in his 90s, sharing insights gained from decades of experience.

Restoring History, Inside and Out

James’s passion for preservation extends beyond vertical transportation. Alongside Virginia, he restored the historic Elijah Stearns Mansion in Bedford, MA. This remarkable home, featured in Architectural Digest and admired throughout New England, reflects their shared dedication to historic houses and the stories they carry. Just like the elevators he maintains, the mansion reflects a deep reverence for structure, detail, and purpose.

Recognition and Impact

In 2011, James received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, recognizing his lasting contributions to industry and community. He also endowed a significant scholarship at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, supporting future innovators and tradespeople.

Looking Ahead with Purpose

As he reflects on a lifetime of service, James envisions a future where Embree Elevator continues to thrive while maintaining its reputation for excellence. His greatest hope is to keep inspiring new generations and to pass on the values of safety, integrity, and craftsmanship. Through the Elevator Museum and his ongoing mentorship, he remains deeply involved in shaping the future of the trade.

In honoring the past and uplifting the future, James F. Comley does not simply build elevators; he builds legacies.
