Zachary Feinsilver: Designing Harmony Between People and Nature

Profile

Zachary Feinsilver’s work is all around us, but it often goes unnoticed. That’s exactly how he likes it. As a landscape architect based in Boca Raton, Florida, Zachary believes the best outdoor spaces feel natural. They should flow with the environment and meet people’s needs without calling attention to themselves.

“Good design doesn’t demand your attention,” Zachary says. “It just feels right.”

Zachary’s journey into landscape architecture started early. Growing up in Boca Raton, he was surrounded by South Florida’s lush tropical environment. The beaches, wetlands, and parks became his playground and later his inspiration. “I’ve always felt connected to the outdoors,” he explains. “It’s where I feel most at peace, and I wanted to create spaces that gave others that same feeling.”

From Inspiration to Expertise

After discovering his passion, Zachary pursued a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture at Florida Atlantic University. There, he immersed himself in the study of urban ecology, environmental planning, and site engineering. During his time as a student, he gained practical experience through an internship with a well-known Miami landscape architecture firm. That job taught him the nuances of designing for coastal and tropical settings.

But Zachary wasn’t done learning. He wanted to push his skills further. So, he earned a Master’s degree in Urban Design and Sustainability from the University of Southern California. At USC, he studied green infrastructure and climate-resilient landscaping, both cutting-edge fields at the time. “I realized that sustainability wasn’t just an option—it was a necessity,” Zachary recalls. “We have to think about the future when we design anything.”

Building a Diverse Career

Today, Zachary has a portfolio that spans small residential gardens and large urban parks. He’s worked as a Principal Designer at Coastal Elements Landscaping, where he created luxury outdoor spaces using eco-friendly methods. He also served as Project Manager for GreenScape Urban Solutions, leading efforts to transform urban parks into vibrant, sustainable hubs.

Zachary also collaborates with architects, developers, and local governments as an independent consultant. “Each project is different,” he says. “That’s what keeps it exciting. I might be designing a garden one week and a public park the next.”

A Thoughtful Philosophy

Zachary’s work is guided by a simple but powerful philosophy: outdoor spaces should be functional, sustainable, and beautiful. He prioritizes native plants and energy-efficient features, like water management systems that prevent runoff. “We’re not just designing for today,” he notes. “We’re designing for decades to come.”

Community impact is another key part of his approach. Public spaces, he believes, should bring people together. “Parks and gardens aren’t just for decoration. They’re places where people connect with each other and with nature.”

Zachary’s designs also reflect his artistic side. He often draws inspiration from his travels, whether it’s the structured gardens of Europe or the minimalism of Japanese Zen landscapes. “Every culture has its own way of connecting with nature,” he says. “I try to bring a little of that global perspective into my work.”

Giving Back to the Community

Zachary doesn’t just design outdoor spaces—he also advocates for them. He works with local organizations in Boca Raton to restore natural habitats and promote sustainable landscaping practices. One of his favorite projects involves creating urban gardens with community groups. “It’s amazing to see people come together to build something beautiful and meaningful,” he says.

His efforts extend to education as well. Zachary often leads workshops on topics like native plants and green infrastructure. “Knowledge is power,” he explains. “The more people understand about their environment, the more they’ll want to protect it.”

A Life in Balance

Despite his busy career, Zachary makes time for the things he loves. He’s an avid kayaker and often explores the Everglades. He also hikes local trails and photographs Florida’s wildlife. “Being outdoors recharges me,” he shares. “It’s where I find inspiration for my designs.”

At home, Zachary tends to a garden filled with native plants, herbs, and flowers. He describes it as both a personal sanctuary and a way to experiment with new ideas. “My garden is like a living lab,” he says with a laugh. “It’s where I test out concepts before using them in bigger projects.”

Zachary’s love of nature also extends to travel. He seeks out iconic landscapes wherever he goes, from the geometric gardens of Europe to the serene parks of Japan. “Travel opens your eyes to new possibilities,” he says. “It reminds you that there’s always more to learn.”

Looking Forward

As he reflects on his career, Zachary remains optimistic about the future of landscape architecture. He hopes to see more professionals embrace sustainability and create spaces that enrich both people and the planet. “We have an incredible opportunity to make a difference,” he says. “I want my work to inspire others to think about the long-term impact of their designs.”

Zachary’s vision is clear: he wants to leave behind a legacy of beautiful, functional, and environmentally conscious spaces. “It’s not just about what we build,” he concludes. “It’s about how it makes people feel—and how it helps the planet.”
