Latin American and Caribbean Nations Reaffirm Commitment to Sustainable Development at ECLAC’s 40th Session
Representatives from Latin American and Caribbean countries reiterated their dedication to fostering more productive, inclusive, and sustainable development during the inauguration of the 40th Session of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), taking place in Lima, Peru, Friday, October 11.
During the opening of this key biennial meeting, ECLAC called on governments and societies across the region to rethink, reimagine, and transform with a long-term, forward-looking approach to shaping the future through strengthened anticipatory governance.
The event was inaugurated by Peru’s President Dina Boluarte, United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed (via video), and ECLAC’s Executive Secretary José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs. Also present was Samuel Ortiz Basualdo, Argentina’s Ambassador to Peru, representing the country as the outgoing Chair of ECLAC from the 39th Session.
In her speech, President Boluarte highlighted the important role ECLAC plays in fostering stronger relationships among countries in the region and in aligning development priorities in international forums. Ambassador Ortiz Basualdo, speaking on behalf of Argentina as the outgoing Chair, acknowledged the Commission’s profound influence on regional academic discourse and public policy.
ECLAC’s Executive Secretary, José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, urged the region to take decisive, coordinated action to break free from development traps, promote a more productive and inclusive future, and contribute to building a better global environment.
Following the inauguration, Salazar-Xirinachs presented a position document titled Development Traps in Latin America and the Caribbean: Vital Transformations and How to Manage Them. The document offers new strategies for addressing critical development challenges and closing existing gaps in the region.
After the presentation, foreign ministers and high-level officials from ECLAC’s member countries engaged in a dialogue focused on the region’s development challenges. Over the three-day event, leaders will also participate in a high-level seminar featuring four thematic panels that will explore key topics: achieving sustainable and inclusive growth, reducing inequality and fostering social mobility, promoting environmental sustainability and addressing climate change, and mobilizing financial resources for development.
This meeting marks the beginning of Peru’s tenure as Chair of ECLAC, which will continue until the next session in 2026 while concluding Argentina’s term as Chair, which began during the 39th Session held in Buenos Aires in 2022.
