Billionaire Mukesh Ambani Expands Private Jet Fleet with India’s First Boeing Business Jet 737 MAX 9

Mukesh Ambani, India’s wealthiest individual, has added a new aircraft to his already expansive fleet of private jets. The Boeing Business Jet (BBJ) 737 MAX 9, which recently joined the Reliance Industries fleet, is the first of its kind in the country. After undergoing extensive cabin customizations and upgrades, the aircraft is now valued at an estimated $120 million. As chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries, Ambani will incorporate this luxurious jet into the company’s operations.

The BBJ 737 MAX 9, based on the Boeing 737 MAX series, is a custom-configured aircraft typically manufactured alongside its commercial counterparts. However, BBJ variants are sent to specialized facilities for additional modifications. In Ambani’s case, the aircraft was flown to Basel EuroAirport in Switzerland on April 13, 2023, where it underwent extensive interior modifications and safety testing. Some of these tests included flights over Switzerland and a stop at London Luton Airport.

The jet, with manufacturer serial number (MSN) 8401, arrived in Delhi on August 27, 2024, and is currently stationed near Delhi Airport as it awaits its next flight to Mumbai, where Reliance Industries is headquartered. It is expected that the aircraft will be based in Mumbai alongside other jets in the company’s fleet.

This latest addition to Reliance Industries’ fleet joins an impressive lineup, which includes an Airbus Corporate Jet (ACJ) A319, two Bombardier Global 5000s, two Dassault Falcon 900s, a Bombardier Global 6000, and an Embraer ERJ-135. Reliance also operates several Sikorsky S-76 helicopters for business purposes.

The BBJ 737 MAX series, launched by Boeing in April 2014, began deliveries in October 2018 and offers three variants: BBJ MAX 7, BBJ MAX 8, and BBJ MAX 9. The MAX 9, the largest in the series, has become a popular choice for executives due to its size and lower operating costs compared to custom-built business jets.
