Dak Prescott Signs Record-Breaking $240M Contract Extension with Cowboys to Become Highest-Paid Player in League History
Just hours before their season opener against the Cleveland Browns, the Dallas Cowboys finalized a record-setting contract extension with quarterback Dak Prescott. Reports indicate that Prescott has signed a four-year, $240 million deal, making him the highest-paid player in NFL history. The agreement, which was reached just 90 minutes before kickoff, includes a staggering $231 million in guaranteed money and sets a new benchmark with an average annual salary of $60 million.
The Cowboys and Prescott had been negotiating throughout the offseason, finally coming to terms after months of speculation. Prescott, who finished as the MVP runner-up last season with a career-high 35 touchdown passes, is coming off a tough playoff loss. His postseason record fell to 2-5 after a costly pick-six in a 48-32 wildcard defeat to Green Bay, a result that shook the team from top to bottom, including owner Jerry Jones.
Dallas faced numerous contract uncertainties over the summer, with Prescott, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, pass-rusher Micah Parsons, and head coach Mike McCarthy all entering critical periods in their careers. After securing Lamb on a long-term deal earlier, the Cowboys have now locked in their star quarterback for the next four years. Attention will soon turn to Parsons, who is expected to pursue a record-breaking contract of his own. Meanwhile, McCarthy’s future remains uncertain as he heads into his fifth season with the team.
Despite the lengthy contract negotiations, the Cowboys enter the season with high expectations and Super Bowl ambitions. The new deals for Prescott and Lamb have quieted rumors that Jones might consider rebuilding the roster if this season ends in disappointment. Veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks expressed confidence in Prescott’s leadership, noting the quarterback’s consistency and praising him for his resilience.
Cooks emphasized that even the greatest quarterbacks, like Tom Brady and Drew Brees, had strong support systems around them, suggesting Prescott couldn’t shoulder all the responsibility alone. However, with the record-setting contract now in place, questions about Prescott’s ability to lead the Cowboys to postseason success will only intensify until he delivers on the field.
In response to the pressure, Prescott said it’s something he welcomes. He emphasized the importance of the team sticking together and acknowledged the fleeting nature of the current roster, noting that changes are inevitable in the business of football. “It’s now. Period,” he said, signaling his readiness to face the challenges ahead.
