Rajalingam Subramaniam Steps Down as CEO of MISC, Zahid Osman to Succeed

After two years at the helm, Rajalingam Subramaniam, widely recognized in Malaysia’s shipping industry as Captain Raja, has decided to step down from his role as president and CEO of MISC Berhad, the nation’s leading shipping company. This unexpected decision marks a significant leadership transition for one of the world’s largest maritime operators.

Rajalingam’s departure, announced recently by the MISC Board, is attributed to his desire to explore new opportunities outside the company. His tenure at MISC was marked by efforts to steer the company through the complexities of the global shipping industry, particularly in a period characterized by economic uncertainty and evolving environmental regulations.

To fill the void left by Rajalingam, the board has appointed Zahid Osman as the new president and CEO. Zahid, who has been with MISC since 2017, brings a wealth of experience to the role. Before joining MISC, he held key positions at Shell, a global leader in the energy sector. Within MISC, Zahid has most recently served as the president and CEO of AET, MISC’s tanker subsidiary, and as the chief operating officer of the MISC Group. His extensive background in both corporate and operational roles positions him well to lead the company into its next phase. Zahid is set to officially assume his new responsibilities on August 16.

Under Rajalingam’s leadership, MISC continued to solidify its standing as a dominant force in the global shipping industry. The company is renowned as one of the world’s largest operators of LNG carriers, a crucial segment in the energy transport market. In addition to LNG carriers, MISC operates a fleet of LPG carriers and two floating storage and offloading units (FSOs), further expanding its capabilities across the energy shipping spectrum. AET, MISC’s subsidiary under Zahid’s leadership, has also made significant strides, becoming a major player in the tanker industry with a fleet of around 100 vessels.

The transition comes at a time when the maritime industry is facing unprecedented challenges and opportunities. As MISC moves forward under new leadership, the focus will likely remain on maintaining its leadership in LNG transportation while exploring new avenues for growth in other segments of the energy and shipping markets.
