French Businesses See Surge in Sales During the Olympics – 29% Rise in Spending by American Visa Cardholders

As the eurozone’s second-largest economy, France is looking to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games to inject some much-needed vitality into its sluggish growth. The country’s national statistics office has forecasted that the Games could contribute a 0.3 percentage point increase to GDP, driven by revenue from ticket sales, television rights, and an influx of tourists.

Recent data from Visa supports this optimistic outlook, revealing that small businesses in Paris experienced a 26% rise in sales to Visa cardholders during the opening weekend of the Olympics compared to the same period last year. This surge in consumer spending offers a promising glimpse of the potential economic benefits the Games could bring to the French economy.

Charlotte Hogg, CEO of Visa Europe, highlighted the positive impact of the event, noting that their latest figures indicate a substantial uptick in spending by Visa cardholders during the first weekend of the Games. According to her, the opening ceremony weekend alone sparked a significant increase in consumer activity, demonstrating the immediate economic impact of hosting the Olympics.

The French media outlet BFMTV attributed much of this financial windfall to a noticeable rise in spending at local shops throughout Paris. The heightened activity in these smaller, often independently-owned businesses suggests that the economic benefits of the Games are reaching beyond the large corporate sponsors and trickling down to the grassroots level of the economy.

Visa, a key corporate sponsor of the Olympics, also revealed that U.S. cardholders were the most significant contributors to foreign spending related to the Games. Spending by American Visa cardholders during the Olympics was up 29% from the previous year, marking a substantial increase in international consumer activity.

In addition to American tourists, visitors from Brazil and Japan also significantly boosted their spending during the Games. Visa’s report, released earlier this week, highlighted these nations as particularly strong contributors to the uptick in economic activity, underscoring the global draw of the Paris Olympics.

The influx of foreign visitors and their increased spending in Parisian businesses, particularly during high-profile events like the Olympics, provides a much-needed stimulus for the French economy. With the Games still underway, France is likely to continue reaping economic benefits as tourists flock to the city and local businesses capitalize on the global attention.
