Addressing Toxic Work Environments: Insights from the APA’s 2024 Survey

The American Psychological Association’s (APA) 2024 Work in America survey, which gathered responses from various industries and job roles, revealed that 15% of respondents described their workplace as somewhat or very toxic. The survey also highlighted a significant disconnect between employers’ perceptions and the actual mental health conditions of their work environments. Nearly 59% of respondents felt their employers believed the work environment was much mentally healthier than it actually was. Additionally, 39% of respondents expressed concerns that disclosing a mental health condition to their employer could negatively impact their careers.

The survey also indicated that individuals with cognitive, emotional, learning, or mental disabilities experienced toxic workplaces at a higher rate, with 24% reporting such experiences. These environments not only affect physical and mental health but also create a climate of fear and a strong desire to leave.

Victor Seshoka, CEO of Kgalalelo Education Foundation, has been particularly vocal about these issues. His experiences in public service, where he witnessed colleagues frequently calling in sick due to demoralizing work conditions, inspired him to write Stepping Into Light: Walking Away from Toxicity to Deal with Toxicity that is Clouding the Workplace. In an interview with Radio Islam, Seshoka discussed his motivations for writing the book, aiming to shed light on toxic workplace dynamics and advocate for positive change.

Seshoka emphasized that toxic workplaces cannot improve on their own and require deliberate efforts to foster better environments. He highlighted the importance of meaningful communication and dialogue as powerful tools for addressing workplace issues and promoting a healthier atmosphere.
