America’s Top 10 Most Valuable Companies, 1990 to 2024
The US economy is heavily reliant on consumer spending, which means it absolutely depends on businesses to identify and sell products that people want. For example, Fortune 500 companies generate a combined annual revenue of $18.1 trillion and employ over 30.4 million people, accounting for two-thirds of the US gross domestic product and nearly one-fifth of all American jobs. Large businesses play a crucial role in the US economy, but the market is always changing, and shifts in consumer preferences inevitably impact corporate America over time. Notably, in 2024, half of the 10 most valuable US companies were less than 35 years old, and none of them were among the 10 most valuable companies in 1990.
Each year since 1990, CEOWORLD magazine has ranked the top 10 S&P 500 companies with the highest estimated market capitalization as of January 1st. The rankings exclusively feature currently publicly traded companies. Market capitalization, or market cap, is calculated by multiplying the number of outstanding shares of a publicly traded company by the value of a single share. Market cap is a preferred metric for gauging a company’s value as it reflects supply and demand dynamics. It’s important to note that the values represented in this story are a snapshot in time and can fluctuate significantly for any given company.
