Tips And Tricks For Planning A Long-Term Stay In Indonesia

Indonesia is well-known for being the largest island and the 14th largest country globally. The nation is a land of heavenly white beaches, phenomenal scenery, a pleasing climate, ancient culture, and a fantastic sum of traditional and modernized culture, making it the most favorable destination for foreigners.

Along with splendid geographical and cultural features, Indonesia has a lower cost of living, allowing residents to enjoy their stay on the land. Many foreigners are eager to get Indonesian permanent residency permits to live and work trouble-free with their loved ones. If you plan to move to Indonesia, getting your PR permit and availing of various benefits is a great choice.

Types Of Residence Permits In Indonesia

Although getting a permanent residency is a gateway to advantages like ease of travel, freedom of movement, lower living costs, and owning land or property, obtaining one is quite tricky. Let us now check a few tips and tricks through which a foreigner can apply for their residency permit in Indonesia:

ITAS/KITAS

KITAS is the abbreviation form of Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas, which means Temporary Residency Permit. A foreigner can apply for temporary residency by KITAS, valid for about two years. However, as KITAS is not a permanent residency card, people can not enjoy long-term benefits. One of the prime benefits of owning a temporary benefit is that individuals can renew the same at least three times after expiry, and the application procedure takes about 3 to 4 months to get the permit.

Applying for a KITAS permit from the embassy or online can be done 30 days after arriving in Indonesia. There are various types in which a foreigner can apply for a KITAS license according to their need and reasons for living in the country. Thus, the requirements and documents may differ depending on the KITAS permit type. The common types of temporary residency permits are:

  1. Family Visa KITAS
  2. Work Visa KITAS
  3. Student Visa KITAS
  4. Retirement Visa KITAS

ITAP/KITAP

KITAP is the abbreviation form of Kartu Izin Tinggal Tetap, which means Permanent Residency Permit. Unlike KITAS, this permit card has long-term validity and allows immigrants to reside in Indonesia. KITAP is an excellent opportunity for individuals to get their second home, and they can avail of additional rights and benefits after obtaining the permit. Although this permit is valid for five years, individuals can renew the card five times.

As discussed earlier, obtaining a permanent permit is pretty tricky in Indonesia. Most foreigners get a KITAS permit as the first step to residency. However, there are specific requirements and eligibility to live in Indonesia, which are promptly discussed below.

Requirements And Eligibility For Residency Permit

Obtaining a permanent residency permit demands admissible eligibility. Individuals who are interested in the same must first qualify for the following requirements to apply for a PR permit:

  1. A person has to live for at least three uninterrupted years in Indonesia and get their KITAS permit.
  2. A person with an Indonesian spouse can apply for a residency permit.
  3. The Indonesian firm’s foreign directors, commissioners, and investors can apply and have their sponsorship letters.
  4. A person must have a permit from the Director-General of Immigration.
  5. A person has to submit all the official documents besides the application.

Indonesian permanent residency is a legal right for a foreigner to live, work, and study with family. As a PR permit is an excellent way for an individual to get a second home in Indonesia, a person must abide by all requirements. Additionally, getting an Indonesian permit allows one to enjoy various rights, responsibilities, and perks of living on a heavenly island, making it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
