Two hours away from London

It is built on a hill in central west England, on both banks of the River Coln, a tributary of the Thames. On one side of the river is the fairytale village, and on the other is the famous Arlington Rack Aisle and Awkward’s Hill. Bibury is only 2 hours away from London. You can reach it by private car or by public transportation such as a bus. If you choose a train that leaves you at the nearest Kemble station or a taxi, you will find yourself in the center of the village.

Bibury is an area of outstanding natural beauty in the Cotswolds and the gateway to many walks in the hills of the British countryside. The puppet village receives countless tourists as its photograph adorns the first inside page of British passports. This has turned it into the most famous village in the whole country—a popular destination for locals in autumn but equally enchanting all year round. In the summer, you will rest on the grass under the giant trees. In winter, you will take pictures under the smoky chimneys of the imposing houses.

Follow the historic steps of the village

The history of the lovely village is lost in the Iron Age. Follow in the footsteps of the workers at the Rawbarrow camp, which looks down on the whole village, and discover the appearance of the first Romans in the area through the well-preserved Roman villa of Bibury. Find yourself in the Anglo-Saxon period as you visit St Mary’s church, originally built in the 8th century and restored from scratch in the 11th century.

Then you can get lost inside the stone cottages of the village of Arlington, known today as Arlington Raw. They were built in the 1380s and were used first as animal wool warehouses and then as weavers’ warehouses. Their timeless Victorian beauty attracts thousands of visitors.

Visiting River Coln and the villages

Idyllic boating rides on the river Coln are a must-see spot of the mythical village where you can fall in love with the view of the cottages and the endless nature. Walk on the three bridges that connect the two villages of Bibury and Arlington. A hint for all Instagramers is the old Raw Bridge, the most scenic bridge for photos near farmhouses.

Explore the world beyond the cottages

Who would have thought that in a village, there would also be a fairytale island? Shortly after the cottages, there is “the Rack Isle,” owned by the National Trust since 1956. As you reach the islet of Bibury, you’ll notice a crooked wooden fence running parallel to the trail. This was the drying “shelf”‘ for the woolen cloth made by the weavers. They used to send them to the Arlington Mill for disinfection and then hang them there to dry.

Through the path, you will find yourself in the heavenly wetland, where you will meet grass snakes, butterflies, and cows. Dance through the spectacle of wildflowers and take the most iconic portrait images.

Bibury Trout Farm in the Valley of the Coln

A nice suggestion is to dine at the oldest trout farm in the UK, founded in 1902 by Arthur Severn. The beautiful BiburyTrout Farm is in the Valley of the Coln.
