A Trip To Bern: The Attraction Of Switzerland

Bern is one of the most emblematic green cities in Europe. It is a city with characteristic arcades and medieval architecture that has remained untouched all these years. It is the capital and the 4th largest city in Switzerland. Bern is located in central Switzerland and is crossed by the River Aare – a tributary of the Rhine. Bern is a living jewel of culture, which is why it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983. It is no coincidence, of course, that thousands of tourists every year are attracted to this small town since it is an ideal travel destination thanks to its recreational value with its green spaces, sports, attractions, and short distances, which allow you to see all of it in just a few days. So let’s travel through this article to Bern.

Flying to Bern

Bern is a small town with a very high quality of life. Therefore, you need to have a good budget before you visit it. A quick way to travel is to take a plane to Zurich airport and take a train to Bern from there. Of course, why not take a plane directly to Bern? The reason is that Bern Airport is small, and the flights available are limited and seasonal. Undoubtedly, the route will not disappoint you because if you take the train, you can enjoy the beautiful landscapes in just two hours.

Accommodation options

As we said before, Bern is a prosperous city with various accommodation options for every budget, from backpacker hostels to luxury star hotels, Suites in the Old Town Center, and camping. Now you have many companies that can find the most suitable accommodation for you.

Sights and museums

In a city with so much history and many important personalities that have passed through it, it is impossible to get bored or feel that there is nothing else to see. Every stone has a story to tell. Let’s see which should not be missed by anyone who visits Bern:

Clock tower

This is the landmark clock of Bern, located in the middle of the city. A monumental clock is adorned with oversized dials, gold figures, and details at the top of the tower. Every day it attracts many visitors who want to admire and photograph the spectacle.

Historic Old Town

Bern’s Old Town is one of the classic visitor options, offering fascinating insights into the past. UNESCO has ensured that the undeniably medieval sandstone buildings, charming alleys, and monumental buildings from 1191 are preserved.

Bear Park

The relationship between the city and the bears has a very long tradition. It is said that the name of the city of Bern itself (Bern) came from the word ”bear.” According to a legend, Duke Berchtold V killed a bear in the area in 1191, and because of the incident, he wanted to give this name to the city. However, opinions differ, as other researchers believe the city’s name is related to the northern city of Italy, Verona. In any case, it is since 1857 that the city has been trying to preserve bears in Bern through the zoo.

Cathedral of the city

Bern’s Gothic cathedral (Münster Kirche) is an important work of Swiss Gothic architecture. It rises above the Old Town of Bern, and the first foundation stone was laid in 1421. It took many years to complete the Temple. However, it is a building of great cultural and political value for the city. Arriving at the Building / Museum, you can climb the bell tower, where you will have a stunning view of the city.

Alternative activities

Apart from being a beautiful city with a great history and stunning architecture, Bern is a sports city with an international feel. The recreational value of the city has to do, of course, with the green spaces and parks. For people who prefer to stay active and close to nature on their travels, they can try many of the sports activities of the city.
