5 Reasons Why Victims Should Confront Their Abusers

Victims feel extremely vulnerable and weak after an assault has been made against them. However, it is important to find the strength and confront the people who are responsible for that because doing that has only good things to offer. Here, we talk about the top 5 reasons why everyone should do it and what everyone has to win from that.

  1. Protecting one’s self
The first reason why someone should talk about their personal insult is that it is a way to protect themselves. Talking about the abuse one has received means that people are now aware of it. Even if the abuser decides to attack again, people will keep an eye on the victim. This will prevent the abuser from making another try and encourage them to take distance from the victim. Even if the law does not punish them due to lack of evidence, one thing is for sure; from now on, they will have to watch out for the reaction of others. Victims can ask for the help of the police to protect themselves. Still, even if things do not go that far, public opinion will have drastic results.
  2. Protecting future potential victims of these abusers
Remember that a person who has harmed one single citizen can harm others too. Going public or talking to a small group of friends about what has happened demands a lot of courage from the victim’s side. However, saving even one person from a future attack is worth the trouble. The cycle of silence has nothing to offer. In addition, a victim that has survived today may be nothing more than a lucky person. Who knows what the fate of the next victim will be? Assuming that such an action will not be repetitive is not just optimistic, but we could dare to say that it is completely unrealistic.
  3. Discouraging other potential abusers
Apart from future victims, there are future abusers. Again going in public has a lot to offer; while abusers may seem very hard when the victim is weak, they turn to complete cowards when the enemy is stronger than them and trust us, the power of publicity can work wonders. The more such phenomena reach the light of publicity, the more people are afraid to repeat them. So this way, one does not only save themselves but also ”save” hundreds of victims in the future. A loud message is spread; those abusers will never have this option again.
  4. Restoring justice
Every victim is encouraged to talk and turn to justice for support. Law considers that all criminals have to spend some time in jail to think of their actions and find time to regret them. Eventually, they will not repeat the same mistakes if things go according to the plan when they come out of it. Hopefully, the lesson will be learned, and punishment is a common way to do that.
  5. Getting over it
Last but not least, let’s dedicate a few lines to describe a victim’s feelings after these attacks. The psychology of the person sexually or physically assaulted is bad. The person feels shame. Even though they have nothing to be accused of, they often blame themselves for many reasons. One of them is that they should have guessed things would turn out this way. Another common belief is that they encouraged the abuser with their behavior which may have been provocative or whatever. Some may even think they should act faster or not hesitate to return the violence and prevent it. Many thoughts will cross the victim’s mind to help them understand how to protect themselves the next time. Whenever we are unsure if we have done the right thing, it may be crucial that someone else will come to reassure us that the attack was not our fault. The feedback society will give back will allow this person to heal their wounds and get it over with. The second part concerns that they may feel angry about what happened and want revenge. Feelings of anger and resentfulness accompany every violent action. There is no better revenge than going public. The abusers will finally have to apologize. If we do not give this anger the right path to be expressed, the victim may carry it for the rest of their lives.
