What You Should Know About the International School of Como

Elementary education is critical to the foundational development of children. While many countries formally acknowledge this fact, many countries implement favorable measures. Italy is one of them. In the Italian education system, public education is free for all resident children. Moreover, schooling is mandatory from primary to upper secondary level. Thus, the government wants children to attend elementary school, but the question of where is answered differently.
There are both public and private schools in Italy. Public schools are free, but the curriculum is local-centric and is usually instructed in Italian. These schools offer high-quality education but are considered to be challenging for foreign nationals. Immigrant children, especially younger ones, are yet to adapt to the alien culture and require a smooth transition phase, a task for which many international schools are fit.

International schools are private in nature. This means they are not free. Despite the amount spent on them, they are globally recognized. They are also infrastructurally and administratively much better. Finally, they provide representation to multiple nationalities. One of Italy’s most popular international schools is the International School of Como–an especially favorite choice for elementary education.
Let’s know more about the school:

  1. What’s it about
Let’s start with the basics. The International School of Como, or simply IS Como, is part of a leading chain of global schools offering premium education to its students.

The chain consists of 80 schools catering to more than 70,000 students worldwide. It is a distinguished member of the International Schools Group authorized by the International Baccalaureate (IB) to offer all three programs, including the Primary Years Programme (PYP), for elementary school children. Children are placed in settings that encourage innovative thinking and applying learned skills.
  2. The Curriculum
As noted above, all three curricula under the IB program are offered. For the purpose of the article, we will focus on the one offered at the elementary level.

The PYP comprises a transdisciplinary approach featuring inquiry-based pedagogy. It is recognized in around 100 countries. The underlying objective is to impart knowledge and teach children about applying the acquired knowledge. To develop such an insight, the focus is directed on selecting six transdisciplinary themes of global importance.
  3. Beyond Academics
IS Como pays utmost attention to honing the extra-curricular skills of its students. It starts engaging students in diverse activities beyond classrooms and encouraging holistic personality development. These activities also determine career choices in the future.

At IS Como, children are involved in football, coding, photography, writing, music, art, and martial arts. Language classes are offered to students interested in Mandarin and Italian, for which specialist instructors are hired.
  4. Admissions Process at IS Como
The IS Como admits students so long as they are residents of the country regardless of their nationality, gender, race, or religion. The first thing, however, parents must do is submit an application form found on the official
    website.
Several parameters are considered, such as reports from previous schools, the school’s capacity, benefits to the children, and special needs. The final decision rests with the Principal. At times, students may be admitted on a trial basis when doubt persists around the suitability of the programs for certain candidates. Students can be admitted to any program, except for Grade 12 and Grade 13, at any time during the school year.
