5 Reasons Why Students Cheat In Exams

Student cheating in exams

Students are not always acting maturely and wisely. A part of their growing up is to realize that anything worth in life comes after our dedication. If we are not interested in putting our efforts into that, we do not like it enough and should probably search for something we are meant to do. Today we share why students cheat in exams and the mindset behind every cheater.

  1. They underestimate the chances of getting caught
Just like in theft or murder, people most of the time do it because they simply think that they will not get caught. They think the chances of getting caught are so small that it is worth giving it a try. What they fail to realize is that the time and effort they would have to dedicate to pass the exams fair and square is nothing compared to the risk they have to put themselves through. So, we could say that attempting to cheat is a wrong evaluation of possibilities and chances and a tendency to base your results on luck instead of hard work.
  2. They are not aware of the consequences
Some students think that cheating is about not getting caught. However, it is not only the fear of embarrassment that should stop them. Many institutions have extremely strict regulations when it comes to cheating. Some colleges will not allow students to complete their studies and will never give them a degree. Can you imagine what a waste of time and money this means for the student? The regulations exist to discourage students from attempting such a practice. Those unaware of the punishment and the price of cheating will take the decision to risk their education and career to save a few hours of extra studying.
  3. They want to succeed
Cheating may be a way to ensure one will pass the final exams. If they do not get caught and manage to skip all the obstacles that come with this challenge, they may get a better grade or simply pass the exam. This attitude shows that the person is ambitious and cares to find a way to ensure they will have a good grade. However, apart from the will to succeed, this also shows that these kids are commonly afraid to fail. Failure is a part of the game, and it is a big school for life in the future. It is ten times better to fail a test rather than to build up a business that will not be sustainable. Becoming familiar with failure is more important than the grade of a lesson. So, while cheating in exams shows motivation, it also reveals the wrong approach students have when it comes to setting and reaching their goals.
  4. They are not prepared for the exams
We talked about how motivated these kids are but did not mention how lazy they can be. The first reason someone will cheat is that they have simply not prepared for the exams. If this is not the case, a more pessimistic scenario is here. The students have a lack of confidence. They have put effort into studying but cannot trust themselves that they will succeed. They will never know how to trust themselves if they do not try their powers on the final exam.
  5. They do not care for the lesson
Last but not least, we have to mention another approach according to which the student thinks the lesson has nothing to offer them. Therefore they believe that dedicating their time to learning will be a total waste. They refuse to understand that teachers who ask them to cooperate and learn the topic perhaps know better. Even though realizing our preferences is important, it is also crucial to realize that not everything has to be designed according to our will, and sometimes we have to obey and follow the rules.
