Reconnect With Nature at Jetwing Surf in Arugambay

Veidehi Gite

My whirlwind odyssey started in the bustling city of Colombo, taking me on a 444km adventure of discovery, through Kurunegala, Habarana, and Gal Oya, to the secluded paradise of Arugam Bay. From my departure point in Mumbai, India, the incredible journey spanned a staggering 2811 km, giving me the chance to explore a new side of Sri Lanka.

As I embarked on my journey from Gal Oya to Arugam Bay, the sky was a breathtakingly beautiful orange, almost like a work of art as the sun slowly descended. The roadside palms were a siren’s song, the gentle breeze a welcomed respite from the sweltering heat. The street vendors selling their local treats were a delightful bonus. My anticipation mounting as I got closer to my destination, I was in absolute awe at the sight of the majestic palm trees, radiant beaches and locals dressed to perfection in their checkered dhotis and vibrant sarees. And then, I finally arrived in Arugam Bay, and was instantly enraptured by the beauty of its crystal clear waters, golden sand, and the array of colourful boats.

Exploring the majestic ocean is a truly invigorating experience. Maybe it’s the calming sound of waves lapping the shore, the scent of the salty sea air, or the never-ending horizon. Whatever it is, there’s something about it that makes you feel connected to the wonders of nature. In search of an eco-friendly destination for my next holiday, I was delighted to discover Jetwing Surf – a secluded, palm-fringed paradise hidden away on a strip of glimmering white sand at the east coast in Pottuvil. And it’s only a few minutes away from the renowned surfing hub of Arugam Bay, or as the locals call it, “six villages by the bay”.

As soon as I pulled up to the property, I knew I was in for something special. The Cabana Resort was a verdant wonderland with a view of the Indian Ocean that could only be described as breathtakingly beautiful. I was ushered in by Azeem Hafi, the Resident Manager of Jetwing Surf, who offered me a unique welcome in the form of wood apple juice served in its original shell. It was a delightful touch that spoke volumes about the resort’s dedication to preserving the environment. Everywhere I looked, the resort’s commitment to nature was palpable, and I was entranced by the magical paradise before me.

I was absolutely ecstatic to find myself in the lap of luxury at this paradisiacal eco-resort in Sri Lanka. It was a great feeling to know that I was contributing to the conservation of this special place just by being there. This sumptuous destination was engineered to be a beacon of responsible tourism, with natural ventilation throughout the property and low-carbon cabanas. As I stepped inside, I was welcomed by wooden structures, woven coconut palm leaves, and dried illuk grass, creating a truly Sri Lankan atmosphere. This breathtaking resort was designed by the ingenious architect John Balmond, and inspired by the delicate sea shells that line the gorgeous beaches. What a wonderful way to enjoy the Sri Lankan hospitality!

Step into a slice of tropical heaven at this sustainable beachfront space! You’ll find twenty cabanas, each 61.6 sq.m. of seashell-shaped bliss, with rustic exteriors and contemporary interiors. Jetwing’s signature tropical modernism creates a truly unique bedroom experience! Plus, you’ll enjoy 100% natural ventilation, thanks to the ceiling and standalone fans – all so you can bask in the eastern breeze. But the architectural design of this space is what really takes your breath away – with its thatched roofs providing a resourceful and sustainable method of shade, and coconut palm leaves and dried illuk grass making for a cozy ambiance. And, of course, with the plush bed and two large sofas, you’ll never want to leave! Best of all, these features are so seamlessly integrated into the design, you may not even notice them – unless you’re looking for them, of course.

The cabana was buzzing with energy from its 220V-240V power supply, equipped with a phone, Wi-Fi, and a tea/coffee-making facility, plus a few other luxuries like bottled water in glass bottles, an electronic Safe, two pairs of slippers, sun hats, and even a set of binoculars for a bird’s-eye view of the surroundings. The natural bathroom was just as impressive, featuring a covered and open shower area with both indoor and outdoor showers, a seashell-inspired washbasin, a hair dryer, bathrobes, plenty of towels, and some of the most premium toiletries around. Talk about living the high life!

For an unforgettable beachside experience, look no further than the luxurious ocean-view cabanas! Each cabana features a private outdoor deck, a true little paradise complete with a huge canopy umbrella, two comfy summer beds, and a table with two chairs perfect for soaking up the sun or watching the majestic sunrise each morning. Every detail has been carefully considered with sustainability in mind, from the awe-inspiring architecture to the carefully chosen materials used in construction. Immerse yourself in nature without having to sacrifice modern amenities and comfort – the staff is unbelievably welcoming and kind, and the property is enveloped by stunning scenery that will leave you feeling recharged and at one with the earth.

Rella, with its majestic, thatched roof facing the ocean, quickly became my top choice for dining during my stay with Jetwing Surf. I was so excited to find this open-air paradise, where a team of talented chefs worked their magic to create a truly delectable dining experience. As I indulged in each morsel, I was mesmerized by the azure seascape in front of me. The cool sea breeze gently brushed my skin and my senses were overwhelmed with pure relaxation.

Rella’s got it all! From a fully-stocked bar to a wine cellar filled with exquisite bottles, there’s something for everyone. I’m so glad I went with the handpicked set menu – it was like a global tour for my taste buds! It’s a good thing I packed my appetite because I was blown away by the batter-fried prawns with baked Tuna, egg Kotthu, Carry Prawns Sushi with heirloom rice, and cappuccino cake with vanilla ice cream – all of which were absolute culinary perfection. So much so that I went back for seconds – I couldn’t get enough of the deliciousness!

Whether you dine beneath the shade of a tree or soak up the sun in the open air, letting the refreshing breeze of the eastern seas caress your skin, the possibilities are endless. For those seeking a more secluded experience, enjoy a meal by the pool, on the beach, in your cabana, or with a BBQ! Dive into a spiritual journey of discovery and explore the legacies left behind by historical sights, while uncovering the vibrant mix of history, nature, and everything else in between in the largely unexplored neighbouring regions of the eastern and southern provinces of Sri Lanka. Get ready for adventure, it’s all waiting for you!

Step back in time and explore the majestic and mysterious Kudumbigala Monastery – a sight that will enchant and delight! Gaze in awe at the enchanting cylindrical dagoba, so rarely seen in Sri Lanka, and take in the stunning views of the bucolic East. Uncover the centuries-old secrets of the Muhudu and Magul Maha Viharayas, where royalty have left their mark. Delve deep into the captivating ruins of the Sastrawela Maninaga Pabbatha Viharaya, where ancient inscriptions will give you a glimpse into the lives of scholars of the past. Take a short and sweet stroll to the market and pick up some organic produce! To top it off, join us for a thrilling cookery demonstration, where you’ll learn to recreate some tantalizing Sri Lankan dishes that will tantalize your taste buds!

The eastern seas beckon with their promise of waves perfect for surfing, and Pottuvil Point is an ideal spot for novice surfers. But the real draw is Arugam Bay, an internationally renowned surfing destination, where surfers flock to take on spots like Peanut Farm, Whiskey Point, Crocodile Rock, and Elephant Rock. And if you’re looking for something a little tamer, the pristine stretch of soft sand just beyond the property is the perfect place to get your beach volleyball game on.

Jetwing Surf

Let the wilds of nature capture your imagination with a thrilling boat safari across the Pottuvil Lagoon and Urani River. As you cast your lines and hunt for the day’s freshest catch with a local fisherman, you’ll be accompanied by a resident naturalist from Jetwing Surf. As you drift along the tranquil waters, you’ll be surrounded by a wondrous landscape of teeming flora and fauna. Embark on the ultimate birdwatching journey to explore the regional lakes of Panama, Rotakulam, and Semanikulam! With the help of an experienced naturalist, you’ll be able to identify each species quickly by studying their behavior, listening to their calls, and doing other fun-filled activities!

With an unmatched commitment to sustainability, Jetwing Surf is the perfect place for anyone who’s looking to reconnect with nature.
